UEF succesful in university rankings

This spring has witnessed the publication of two university rankings and, in the Leiden Ranking by Leiden University, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked 250th. In the ranking list of European universities, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked 107th, and in the ranking list of Finnish universities, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked 1st, leaving the University of Helsinki and Aalto University behind. This result is achieved when using the proportion of top 10% publications as the indicator.

The Leiden Ranking uses a set of bibliometric indicators to measure the scientific impact and research collaboration of a total of 500 major universities worldwide. The Leiden Ranking website allows the comparison of universities by a variety of indicators. The Leiden Ranking uses articles published by university staff in scientific journals, and the data is based on the Thomson Reuters Web of Science database from the period 2008–2011.

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject published in May, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked among the world’s top 200 universities in three different subjects. In Agriculture and Forestry, the university was ranked among the world’s top 100 universities and in Geography and Medicine among the world’s top 200 universities.

This was the first time the University of Eastern Finland was ranked among the leading universities in Agriculture and Forestry, the second time in Geography, and the third time in Medicine. The indicators used in the QS World University Rankings by Subject are academic reputation, employer reputation, citations and, a new introduction for 2013, the h-index, which attempts to measure the impact and productivity of studies published.
