ISYY’s Representative Council elections aim at 30 % voter turnout

The fifth Representative Council elections of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) will take place this fall. The voter turnout in ISYY elections has never reached 30 %. This year, the aim is to break this number.

The Representative Council elections of ISYY are organized this fall in Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna. Composition of the new Representative Council will be known on the 8th of November 2017.

– Our aim is that in the up-coming elections, the voter turnout would reach 30 percent or at least close. Increase in voter turnout would indicate that our students are interested in student politics and affecting common matters, says the Chairperson of the Central Election Committee, Sami Gabbouj.

In the previous Representative Council elections of ISYY in 2015, the voter turnout was 24.3 percent.

Advance voting days of the elections are from the 30th of October to the 3rd of November, and the actual election day is on the 8th of November 2017. The elected people form the highest decision-making organ of ISYY, the 39-member Representative Council, which amongst other things, decides on the budget, membership fee, operation plan and rules of the Student Union.

Representative Council elections are conducted electronically. Those entitled to vote will receive a link to their email via which the voting happens.

Nomination of candidates is currently underway

Nomination of candidates for the elections ends on the 4th of October 2017.

– We hope that as many of our members as possible would run in the elections. Operating in the Representative Council offers a great possibility to learn important skills concerning administration and decision-making. These skills will surely be useful also in working life, states the Secretary for the Central Election Committee, Anna-Kristiina Mikkonen.

In 2015, there were 173 candidates from 13 different lists of candidates in the Representative Council elections of ISYY.
