The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) has the honor to invite all students to join the Independence Day celebrations on ISYY’s social media.
Due to the current situation, the Independence Day Torch Parade is cancelled in Joensuu. However, you can follow the traditional laying of wreaths on soldiers’ graves and listen to a speech by Mayor Kari Karjalainen at 5pm on ISYY’s Facebook page.
You can follow the Torch Parade in Kuopio at 6pm via live stream. To ensure everyone’s safety, the only attendees of the Torch Parade are members of the Representative Council, active members of ISYY’s clubs and sections, as well as representatives of student organisations. All attendees keep a safe distance to others and use a face mask.
In the Independence Day Torch Parade, ISYY’s representatives carry both the flag of Finland and the flag of the Student Union, whereas the student organisations’ representatives carry pennants of their student organisation. According to tradition, all attendees wear a graduation cap.
After the Torch Parade in Kuopio, you can listen to a speech by the Rector of the University of Eastern Finland Jukka Mönkkönen, which is then followed by the Finnish National Anthem.
– This year we encourage everyone to enjoy the Independence Day festivities from the comfort of your own home! So put on your graduation cap and light a candle at home to celebrate Finland, Aino Peltonen, Chair of the Executive Board encourages.
The Torch parade is one of the oldest and most respected traditions of the Student Union. The Independence Day Torch Parade is held to pay respects to the war veterans and to celebrate independent Finland.
