The Student Union’s Kuopio Campus Board has chosen Henri Hakkarainen and Heidi Hämäläinen as the Velj’mies and Siskotyttö of 2019. They washed and capped the Velj’mies statue at the Student Union’s May Day eve event on 30 April at the Kuopio market square.
The Kuopio Campus Board of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) annually selects two active Student Union members as the Velj’mies (Brother Man) and the Siskotyttö (Sister Girl). The 2019 Velj’mies is Henri Hakkarainen and the Siskotyttö is Heidi Hämäläinen. Both of them are long-time active members of the Student Union and their respective Student Organisations. They had the special honour of washing and capping the Velj’mies statue at the Student Union’s May Day eve pool event at the Kuopio market square.
Both Hakkarainen and Hämäläinen have participated in the Student Union’s operations for many years. Hakkarainen has worked as the chairperson of the Section for Recreation (Kuopio) in 2018, the Executive Board head of Communications and Environmental Affairs in 2017, and as a Representative Council member in 2016. Additionally, he has worked in the Student Union as a Communications Assistant and in the Executive Board of Hyeena, his own student organisation.
– Henri is a familiar face on campus, and not only for students of his own field or participants of the Student Union’s operations. Henri has also worked as a UEF Student Tutor and a UEF Ambassador, says the Chairperson of the ISYY Executive Board Aleksi Kinnunen.
Heidi Hämäläinen has also held many different elected offices in the Student Union. She is the current Second Vice Chairperson of the ISYY Representative Council. In 2018, she served as the First Vice Chairperson of the Student Union Executive Board and the Chairperson of the Kuopio Campus Board, and in 2017 she was the Chairperson of the Section for Recreation in Kuopio. Hämäläinen has also worked in the Executive Board of Socius, her own student organisation.
– In addition to the numerous elected offices she has held, Heidi is known for her Savonian spirit and hard work ethic, and is therefore an excellent choice for Siskotyttö, Kinnunen states.
The 2019 Velj’mies and Siskotyttö were announced on 30 April at the Student Union’s May Day eve pool event at the Kuopio market square.
