The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland

The Covid-19 crisis has further weakened students’ already bleak financial situation, and research shows that the mental wellbeing of students has also plummeted during the pandemic. Students can’t cope anymore.
Even before the pandemic, the OECD estimated that the total cost of mental health problems to Finland is 11 billion euros a year. In order to avoid even higher costs in the future, it is essential to invest in the wellbeing of students now.
We demand that the government decides to invest in students in the budget framework discussions. The shortfall in basic funding for universities needs to be filled, social security for students needs to be invested in, and mental health needs to be promoted in the long term.
Students need real action, not feelgood messages.
