In Joensuu and Kuopio we once again heard the speeches of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) on Vappu Eve (May Day).
After ISYY’s Vappu Parade in Joensuu at the Students’ Vappu Event in Ilosaari, we heard the speech held by Noora Saramäki, the Vice Chair of ISYY Executive Board, and in Kuopio at the ISYY’s Pool Event in Kuopio Market Square the speech was held by Mirka Nieminen, the Chair of the ISYY Executive Board.
Both speeches were first held in Finnish and then briefly in English. Below you can see the part in English of both speeches.
Dear listeners, fellow students, lovely friends,
As we celebrate Student May Day together, it's a day filled with unforgettable moments that will stay with us for a long time. It's a time of joy, belonging, and gratitude for being part of this unique student community. Stepping onto the stage at Ilosaari fills me with awe and gratitude for sharing this moment with all of you.
Student May Day goes beyond a mere date on the calendar—it symbolises community, joy, and freedom. It's a moment to forget the daily hustle and bask in togetherness, smiles, and carefree vibes. Today, students from different backgrounds unite to create lasting memories. It's inspiring to witness various student organizations contributing to this day's success with diverse programs for all.
Yet, Student Day isn't just about celebration; it's a time for reflection on our student life's challenges. Government cuts to education have caused concern, impacting our daily lives and future plans. It's crucial we stand together, demanding justice and access to quality education without barriers.
Despite challenges, let's not forget our achievements. Each student embodies perseverance and courage toward their dreams. I, too, achieved a dream through hard work—transitioning from vocational school to university. So, dare to dream big and pursue your goals boldly. This May Day is even more special as we embrace a new tradition, Teekkari Dipping (or Teekkarikaste in Finnish), symbolizing unity and longevity.
Before we celebrate the Teekkari Dipping, I extend gratitude to all who contributed to this memorable event—students, the city, and our partners. Remember, our unity is our strength, propelling us towards a brighter future.
In closing, I wish you all a joyful May Day! Let's stand strong together, cherishing this community we've built, and celebrate safely!

Dear students and other citizens celebrating Vappu with us,
The news about the General Governments discussion for the Fiscal Plan on 2025-2028 was catastrophic for the students. Cuts for the benefits hit hardest the students who are already living below the poverty line. Among these bad news it is important to remember that we, students, are the future. Over time, the student movement has been part of establishing the Finnish Student Health Service, and student discounts. We have the power, and we all can be a part of the change. I hope you all find your own way to influence the world.
This year, it is also a pleasure to welcome the first Carriers of Honour and the first teekars to Kuopio’s May Day. I’m looking forward to seeing new kinds of May Day traditions they bring with them. It is important, that we don’t stick to traditions just for the sake of sticking to them, and especially for those traditions, that no longer serve us. Who else dares to reform things as boldly as the student movement. It has been a pleasure to notice in recent years how student events have become more diverse, and at the same time more equal.
For a moment I want to draw everyone’s attention to the people around you: the community we build together with our daily actions. Say hello, smile, or ask how they are doing from those you already consider as friends, as well as new faces you meet. Positive actions feed off each other and you can be the person today, tomorrow, and every day after that, who starts this chain of positivity.
Let’s stick with each other and this community we’ve managed to create. Let’s also take care of each other, and celebrate safely!
