HAPPY TUESDAY!

The festive season is upon us and there's only two weeks till Christmas. Everyone should know by now that Santa Claus (joulupukki) is from Finland and that he lives at Korvatunturi in Lapland. Santa visits Finnish homes on Christmas Eve and brings presents to those who have been nice. In addition, Finns celebrate Christmas by getting together with family and friends, eating Christmas treats, taking things slow, and enjoying the break from work or school. I suggest everyone to do the same regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas or not. Check out our Christmas Corner and suggestions for your Christmas in Finland at the end of this newsletter.

If you are leaving Kuopio I hope you have enjoyed your time here, learned a lot and made great memories. I would also like to wish everyone Happy Holidays and New Year!

Kind regards,
Elina
Coordinator of International Affairs

Christmas Corner

Is this your first Christmas in Finland? Or maybe you’re already familiar with the Finnish Christmas traditions but you’re looking for something to do during the holidays? In Finland, Christmas (or 'Joulu' in Finnish, which originates from the Germanic winter festival 'Yule') is mostly viewed as a time to calm down, eat good food and spend time with loved ones. ISYY's Coordinators of International Affairs have gathered you a list of Christmas tips, activities, recipes and ideas for you and your friends to try during the Christmas break.

  • The most iconic Finnish Christmas dessert is joulutorttu - a puff pastry filled with plum jam. It’s super easy to do as you can buy the ingredients ready made from the store, all you need to do is fold them into star shape.
  • If you need something to accompany your joulutorttu, try glögi! Glögi is a type of non-alcoholic mulled wine - a flavored hot beverage with spices such as cinnamon and cardamom. You can find it at the supermarket, just heat it up on the stove or in the microwave!
  • It is a Finnish tradition to hide one almond in a pot full of rice porridge / rice pudding  - the one who gets it on their plate is bound to have good luck for next year! This one is easy to recreate with friends, here is a recipe for the traditional rice porridge.
  • If you want to try traditional Finnish Christmas foods, the campus restaurants have days for Christmas meals! The traditional Christmas dinner is served in Snellmania and Canthia today 10 December.
  • You can enjoy Christmas lights between 13 and 23 December at the Kuopio market square at the Christmas Market. You can also meet Santa Claus on certain dates and listen to Christmas carols!
  • There is a place at the cemetery where you can light a candle for someone who has been buried elsewhere. The cemetery candles are sold in most supermarkets and you can easily recognise them from the gold lid.
  • On Christmas Eve you can watch Joulupukin kuumalinja, which is a traditional live show of Santa answering calls from children all over Finland.
  • Finns love their sauna - especially during Christmas. Check whether your apartment building has a free sauna turn on Christmas Eve so you can enjoy some löyly too.
