HAPPY TUESDAY!

In this week's newsletter you'll find information on ISYY's updates and some events in December. Tomorrow it is the Independence Day of Finland and also a day for the traditional ISYY's Independence Day Torch Parade, which is one of the oldest traditions of the Student Union.

Next week's newsletter will be the last one for this semester and ISYY office will be open for the last day this year in 13th December - if you need or want to visit the office before christmas please do that by Wed 13th December!

Welcome to ISYY's Independece Day Torch Parade!

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) has the honor to invite all student to the Independence Day Torch Parade on 6.12.2023.

The Torch Parade is one of the oldest and most respected traditions of the Student Union.

The Parades are not political events or manifestations. The remembrance of the sacrifices made in the Finnish wars during the Second World War is very present during the Finnish Independence Day celebration. In parades we honour the sacrifices and celebrate the independence in Finland.

The Parade in Joensuu begins at 4 pm from Haltia and in Kuopio at 6 pm from Sotku. Please arrive 15 minutes before the parade begins.

Apply for a band shift at Studentia Band Rehearsal Space until 12th of December!

You can now apply for a shift at Studentia Band Rehearsal Space for the Spring 2024 by filling an online application form.

The application form closes on Tuesday 12th of December at 9:00. All those who have applied for a shift will be contacted at the beginning of week 51 at the latest. Spring shifts are valid from the 1st of January until 31st of May.

One shift is max. 2 hours. On workdays (Mon-Fri) Studentia is open and the shifts can be applied from 8 to 21:30. Weekend shifts are available from 9 to 21.

Apply to the UEF Equality Committee!

ISYY is now taking applications for the position of Student Representatives in UEF Equality Committee for the term 1.1.2024-31.12.2025.

The tasks of the Equality Committee are:

to supervise and direct UEF's obligation to promote equality in its operations required by the equality act, both as an education provider's and as an employer
prepare UEF's equality program and monitor its progress and implementation
make presentations and initiatives to UEF's management and staff on how to promote equality in UEF’s operations.

Application period to the ISYY Annual Celebration team has been continued

The Executive Board of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) decided on their meeting on Wednesday 28 November to continue the call for team members to the ISYY's Annual Celebration team until 13 December 2023.

The first application period ended on 27 November and by that date we received three applicants for the team. There is still room for more people and ideas in the team!

Read the original application call and apply by 13 December! The Annual Celebration of ISYY 2024 will be held in Joensuu.

Present your ISYY Freshman Bingo by 13 December and join the raffle!

ISYY's Freshman Bingo is organised to kick-start the academic year for our new students. By completing at least one bingo row, you'll get an ISYY FUKSI overall patch and you can take part in the Freshman Bingo Raffle.

All those who presents the bingo sheet at the ISYY office can leave their contact info to the raffle, where you can win gift cards to a café.

You can save the bingo sheet to yourself electronically from ISYY website or you can collect a printed bingo sheet from ISYY office. The Freshman Bingo must be completed by 13.12.2023 at 3 pm!

Exceptions in ISYY offices opening hours and Christmas break

In December there will be a few exceptions in ISYY offices opening hours.

The offices in Joensuu and Kuopio are closed on

Wednesday 6 December

This year the offices are open for the last time on Wednesday 13 December at 12:00-16:00.

If you must visit ISYY offices before the holidays, please do that during the first weeks of December. The offices are open again in January on Monday 8th of January.

The Coffee & Friends grande finale 5.12.

Warmly welcome to the Coffee & Friends, which offers hanging out and the opportunity to meet other students over coffee and a snack.

The café meets last time this semester on Tuesday 5.12. at 3-5 pm at Lukema in Kuopio and at 4.30-6.30 pm at Aurora in the AU110 fireplace room in Joensuu. There is chance to play board games.

You can come alone or with a friend, for a while or for the whole time.

Remember to return your Survival Package by Friday 11th December!

For those who have a Survival Package rented for the autumn semester: You can return your survival package to the ISYY office (Yliopistonranta 3, Studentia Building, entrance, door C). You need to return your survival package by Monday 11th December the latest, or bring it to to the office any day before the deadline within opening hours.

Please check the office hours and the instructions provided in the Survival Package carefully! If you have any questions, contact kv.kuopio(at)isyy.fi

Puijo Hill Winter Trail - a guided tour in the snowy nature

Welcome to a guided tour to the Puijo hill on Saturday 9 th December 2023.

During the trail you will learn about Puijo’s nature and history, get some tips for surviving in the cold winter forest and, especially, enjoy sounds, views and atmospheres of the winter forest. There is a snack break in the Antikkala lean-to shelter, and the walk will be about 2 km long. Your guide will be Kerttu Loukusa, a wilderness and nature guide student. The event will be organized in English.

KYTEE-festival 13.-14.12.2023

What: Ohjelmaravintola Maxim, Haapaniemenkatu 43, Kuopio
When: Gigs start at 6 pm

KYTEE-festival mainly features bands from vocational education of Kuopio Conservatory. In the festival you’ll experience seven gigs for example tributes to Alice in Chains and Megadeth as well as big band music played by Pohjantien Junior Big Band. Music technology students are in charge of the sound reproduction of the festival. Check the whole program from the website!

Admission to the festival is free.

The 4€ discount tickets can be purchased at the Kuopio Music Centre Ticket sales only on the day of the concert (open Mon-Fri 3-5 pm or until the beginning of the performance and on weekend 1 hour before the performance). The discount price is only valid if there are still tickets left. A valid student card should be presented when purchasing the discount ticket.

Exceptions in the library opening hours due to Finnish Independence Day

Joensuu and Kuopio Campus Libraries are open on Tuesday 5th December 2023 8am–3pm (customer service 10am–3pm) and KUH Medical Library 10am–3pm.

On Independence Day 6th December 2023 all library offices are closed.

The library's 24/7 self-study facilities are open despite these exceptions.

The interactive webinars are conducted by experienced instructors and offer not only valuable content but also the opportunity for direct exchange on the subject matter and clarification of questions.

If you would like to have something featured in the Weekly Feed, please send a short (max. 500 characters including spaces), informative description of the event/activity in English to either kv.kuopio@isyy.fi (Kuopio events) or kv.joensuu@isyy.fi (Joensuu events).
