HAPPY TUESDAY!

And Happy New Year! Some of you are returning to campus after holidays, and some of you are starting your studies this January. Whether you already know your way around the city and the campus or you're new and wondering where to find everything, reading the first Weekly Feed of the year 2025 is a good start. New and also familiar faces at the ISYY office

At the end of 2024, ISYY had two open positions: Community Coordinator and Coordinator of International Affairs (Joensuu). Eveliina Scharin was elected as the Community Coordinator and she will work mainly from Joensuu office. Eveliina worked in the position last year.

Joona Rantala was elected as ISYY's new Coordinator of International Affairs to Joensuu campus. Joona is about to graduate from the Master's degree programme for Expertise in Education and Adult Education, from the University of Eastern Finland.

ISYY's previous Coordinator of International Affairs, Salla Haapavaara, has moved on to new challenges. Thank you, Salla, for your excellent work at our Student Union, and best luck for future adventures!

Tell us who should receive a recognition from ISYY? 

You can now suggest a candidate to receive a recognition at the ISYY Annual Celebration this spring! Suggestions must be sent by 19 January.

Every member and alumni of ISYY has the right to suggest a person to receive a Medal of Honor, Golden and Silver Medal of Distinction and Medal of the Student Union. The delivered suggestions will be forwarded to ISYY’s Committee for Recognitions and they will prepare the suggestion for the ISYY Executive Board. The final decision of the acknowledgements will be made by the ISYY Executive Board.

Join Language Café activities!

Do you want to learn new languages, brush up your old skills and meet new people or teach your native language? We have the perfect opportunity for you! 

In a Language Café, your peers and friends are your teachers and at the same time, they can be your students. When participating in Language Café activities, you can also earn ECTS credits by attending (1 ECTS) and/or organising a Language Café (2 ECTS) and by submitting a few small assignments to Moodle.

ISYY Council meeting decisions 6/2024 and 7/2024

The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) held its sixth meeting of 2024 on Tuesday 26 November and its last meeting of 2024 on 4 December. The Council approved the 2025 action plan, 2025 budget, and new environmental programme, finalised rule amendments, and created a fixed-term physical activity advisor role for SYKETTÄ Joensuu. The 2025–2028 strategy was reverted back to the preparation stage.

SYKETTÄ's Spring 2025 season

  • SYKETTÄ spring membership fees -  buy from webshop or from ISYY office.
    • Instructed Group Class -package 41,00 € (including vat 14%)
    • Ball Sports – package 23,00 € (including vat 14%)
    • One-month sticker 16 € (including vat 14%)
       
  • Registration for the ball sports or group classes takes place via the sports calendar on our website or the mobile app (SYKETTÄ Kuopio), unless otherwise stated in the class description.
     
  • You can register for classes exactly 7 days before the class starts.
     
  • If you are unable to attend, please cancel your registration no later than 4 hours before the class starts. The exception to this is morning classes starting before 10 am, which must be canceled no later than 12 hours before the class starts.
     
  • P.S. Especially at the beginning of the season, some classes may be very popular, but often cancellation spots become available 4 hours before the class starts.

SYKETTÄ Kuopio 

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members in University of Eastern Finland and Savonia University of Applied Sciences as well as students and staff members of Uniarts in Kuopio. SYKETTÄ has a diverse sports calendar which features more than 40 weekly sports classes and takes into account all movers from beginners to more advanced.

 
 
     
 

 

 
     
 
 

Follow City of Kuopio's social media

City of Kuopio informs its international citizens of upcoming events and activities in English on their Kuopio International Instagram and Facebook accounts. They also post about important changes and exceptions to their services in these channels so give them a follow to get up-to-date information about Kuopio.

The city's website has also lots of useful information e.g. about different sports facilities and outdoor activities so you should go to the website and dig around.

Would You Like to Be a Student Tutor? The application period starts on January 20th.

Apply to be a tutor! If you study in a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree programme at the UEF and are interested in helping the new students in Autumn Semester 2025, you can apply as a student tutor.

The student tutor helps the new students to have a smooth start for their studies. All the new students have a student tutor. And each tutor has a group of tutees.

Tutoring offers many opportunities to learn, for example to develop your communication and coordinating skills.

The tutors will be trained for the job, and they will receive credits and a certificate on tutoring. 

The application period starts on January 20th.

Is French, German or Spanish your mother tongue? Apply to become a course assistant in January! 

Course assistants are international students at the University of Eastern Finland who assist in language courses of their mother tongue. Read more on Language Centre Study community.

Applying for an extension to the right to study becomes subject to a fee and the handling fee for reinstating study right will increase

Starting 1 January 2025 applying for an extension to the right to study is subject to a fee, and the fee is 50 euros. Paying the fee is a prerequisite for handling the application and making a decision on the application. The fee applies to applications relating to rights to study leading to a degree (bachelor’s, master’s, licentiate of medicine, licentiate of dentistry).

The handling fee for reinstating a right to study will increase from 35 € to 50 € starting 1 January 2025.

Nyyti's Chats in spring 2025

Nyyti’s Chat is a group-based chat for students to share their thoughts and experiences. English-language group chat takes place once a month on Thursdays from 5 pm to 7 pm. Chat is anonymous and free of charge.

The group chats provide a platform for peer discussions about mental health and issues affecting mental well-being and study ability. You can join the chats without prior registration. The chat is intended for adult students. Nyyti’s volunteers or staff members will always be there to chat with you.

Join Kuopio Student choir!

UEF Kuopio student choir holds open rehearsals on the 14th of January in SN100 at 18.00. We sing different kinds of music and perform in our concerts and other events and functions.

If you can't make it to our open rehearsal, but still want to join, email us at yo-kuoro@student.uef.fi. In an open rehearsal you get to see what's it like to sing in our choir and at the end you can give us a voice sample in our small audition.

BEATBOXING GURU FELIX ZENGER AS SOLOIST – STUDENT TICKET ONLY 11€!

Felix Zenger, a man of a thousand sounds and rhythms, brings symphonic beatboxing to Kuopio for the first time. The concert will include, for example, Zenger’s own concerto, Flare – Music for Beatbox and Orchestra, and Jennah Vainio’s Fujiko’s Fairy Tale, a journey into the world of Japanese anime and manga fairy tales. The guest virtual soloist of the evening is a Lithuanian cat.

Neulamäki Library Language Cafés in spring 2025

The Library Language Cafés are open, relaxed events where you can practice speaking Finnish in a comfortable atmosphere. When you strike up a conversation, it’s easy to get to know new people and cultures. Of course, you can also participate just by listening!

Library staff will also take part in the games and conversations and collect ideas for future gatherings.

So come along, bring a relaxed attitude and a smile! You can take your whole family with you if you like! Coffee and tea available!

The events are free of charge, and need no signing up. Welcome!
