HAPPY TUESDAY!

The last newsletter of the spring is here! The first newsletter of autumn semester will be published on Tuesday 13 August – see you then! If you want to send us material for the first newsletters, please do that by Tuesday 6 August.

Have you ever heard of the Finnish outdoor game Mölkky? This is something you want to cross off your "only in Finland"-list! The game is very simple and you can play it with as many friends as you want. The goal is to collect exactly 50 points by throwing a wooden skittle and knocking over wooden pins that have numbers from 1 to 12. ISYY members can loan the game at the ISYY office for free!

Have a relaxing summer!

Kind regards,
Elina

Kuopio Pride will be held 5.-8.6.2024!

During Kuopio Pride Week, there will be a variety of fantastic events, culminating in the Pride parade and party on Saturday 8 June!

Equality and transparency are important values for ISYY. ISYY encourages all its members to take part in the Pride parade and park festival, as well as to wear student overalls to form a rainbow.

The parade starts moving at 3 pm from Keilakuja 2 and ends at 4.30 pm at Snellman park, which features a picnic, speeches and, of course, great company. ISYY has its own area in the Snellman park that brings together all students. The first 150 students at the ISYY’s picnic-area will be given ISYY's Pride-Hemmo overall patch as a memory.

The advance voting begins tomorrow and you can vote also on campus, in Kuopio at Studentia (ISYY Office). There are a limited amount of ISYY’s EU Election overall patches handed out at the campus' polling stations.

Summer bucket list

Are you spending summer in Finland? After the long winter and a few winter comebacks (Finns use the word ‘takatalvi’, see description here) summer is finally approaching fast so in honour of this last Weekly Feed, we collected a list of (Finnish) things for you to do in your campus city this summer!

TLDR; Summer in Finland is beautiful yet painfully short, so you’d better enjoy it - here is how:

  • Swim in a lake to throw away your winter coat (heittää talviturkki in Finnish, means to swim in a lake for the first time after winter). You can find a list of  beaches in Kuopio here
  • Pick some forest berries (such as bilberries, raspberries, bog /northern bilberries) and make a pie of the mixed berries you found. Check out also here and here everyman’s rights  (jokamiehenoikeudet in Finnish) which tells you what you can do in Finnish nature
  • Visit a strawberry farm nearby and pick your own strawberries
  • Have a picnic
  • Have a water gun fight
  • Visit Koli if you haven’t already
  • Read a book on the beach or balcony
  • Eat ice cream from a kiosk
  • Make a garland/flower crown out of wild flowers
  • Visit the cafes and restaurants in the city centre and harbour (some of them are open only during summer)
  • Visit nature trails. You can find a list of places near Kuopio here
  • Grill sausages on a campfire. Campfire places in Kuopio can be found here
  • Have a Finnish midsummer - watch midsummer’s bonfire and try traditional midsummer’s night spells. You can find some here
  • Try SUP boarding
  • Play mölkky (you can loan the game from ISYY)
  • Try frisbeegolf (you can loan frisbees from ISYY). You can find tracks in Kuopio here
  • Craft a käpylehmä (pinecone cow)
  • Relax!

Guided nature walks

Regional environmental protection services, welfare promotion services and the Kuopio Museum of Natural History organise guided nature excursions and volunteer events during the summer and autumn. Join us to discover the local forest and its animals, flying squirrels, birds and bats. You will also learn to identify wild herbs, plants, lichens and mushrooms. This summer, you can also try coloring wool yarns with combed lupine and play a forest mystery game.

The excursions are open to all and free of charge, with no need to book in advance (except for a few boat and bus trips). For the full programme of excursions until September, please visit the website via the link below.
