More equal student culture

At the Student Unions Vappu Eve Pool Event, there has been a tradition since 2000, meaning already from the time of the Student Union of the University of Kuopio (KYY), to name two active students as the Vel'jmies and Siskotyttö of the year according to a male- and female statues in the Market square. Already before 2000 the Student Union named the biggest 'pigs' of the year. Through out the history, the named students have had a honorary task to perform the capping of the Velj'mies statue.

This year ISYY has decided to change the name of the nominations to a more equal form, so that we can take all student actives into account in the decision. The new name is 'Kunniankantajat' (eng. Carriers of Honour).

Who will be nominated this year and will get to cap the Velj'mies statue? Tomorrow we'll know.

Immerse of the Professor

Of all the Vappu traditions of ISYY, the Immerse of the Professor is the most waited part of the whole day, also among other citizens and media. The tradition is one of a kind in Finland. The Student Union has named Immersed Professors since 1974.

The named professor is kept as a secret until the actual tradition takes place on Vappu Eve. The Proffessor will be carried by students in a spesific sedan chair infront on the public and they will be immersed in the cold pool of the Velj'mies statue.

This year the Immersed Professor will be already 51st professor immersed by the Student Union.

In the picture there is the Immersed Professor 2023, Jarkko Ketolainen from the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Vappu traditions in Finland

The ultimate student holiday is here! It’s time to grab your overalls and your highschool graduation cap and head for a May Day -themed picnic among other festive students. May Day is usually considered as a holiday celebrating workers, but in Finland it is truly taken over by higher education students with their carnival traditions. Some student organisations start their vappu celebrations two weeks in advance. ISYY’s vappu traditions last for the whole May Day week and include, for example, the Savo-Karjala Excursion. Read more about Vappu in Finland here.

Students' celebration

30th April is the day for student celebrations all over Finland - there’s usually a student cavalcade and traffic is closed so students can parade through the city waving student association flags and sporting their student association's overalls and highschool graduation caps. ISYY has similar traditions in both campus cities. In Kuopio, the Veljmies statue, which is in the market square, is washed and given a cap by two nominated student actives Kunniankantajat ('carriers of the Honor'). The traditions in Kuopio end with Professor immersing in which a teacher is dipped in a fountain.

May Day delicacies

After the student celebrations, it’s common to have a Vappu picnic. The feast includes delicacies such as a sugar-coated doughnut (munkki) and funnel cake (tippaleipä), which is coated with powdered sugar. Tippaleipä translates literally as ‘drip bread’, which refers to it being made by dripping the batter into hot oil through a funnel. To wash all the sugar down Finns usually drink sima - a sweet, sparkling low-alcoholic beverage which is made by fermenting honey, sugar, water and lemon. Traditional sima also includes a few raisins as they don’t just add to the sweetness, but also indicate when the fermentation process is complete by rising to the surface. Read more about Vappu delicacies here.

International students, it’s time to vote. Pick a name for a team showcasing your talent to employers!

We are developing a student team model among the higher education institutions of Eastern Finland to enhance the work-life connections of international students. With the model, we aim to increase cooperation with companies and find internships, student project work, workplace learning opportunities and part-time jobs. The team markets and sells its expertise and that provided by its degree programme. It can also do on-demand projects. For employer organisations, the team offers a new way to find talent.

Look at the name candidates and cast your vote.

The application period for the team starts in September, stay tuned for more info!
