This week's newsletter is a double edition since next week is the winter holiday and Weekly Feed isn't published during holidays. The next Weekly Feed is sent on 14 March. Also, please note that the ISYY offices are closed on week 10 due to the holiday week so if you need to visit the office, please do so by Thursday 2 March.

Get to know Parliamentary Election Candidates in Carelia 13.3.

Welcome to the Parliamentary Election Fair in Joensuu organised by the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland! Come and get to know and discuss with the Parliamentary Election Candidates.

The event is organised in the UEF Campus in the Carelia lobby on Monday 13th March from 10 am until 2 pm. Maybe you'll find yourself a candidate to vote?

The Parties attending the Fair will be published when the enrollment has closed on 2nd March. All the Parties registered in Finland have been invited to the event.

Take part in Finnish Friend pilot project in Joensuu

We know that many of you would like to meet Finns, learn Finnish and get to know Finnish culture during your stay in Finland. Also, ISYY wants to promote internationalisation at home for Finnish students.

Thus, ISYY is organising a hangout for international and Finnish students on Wednesday 15 March starting at 4 pm in classroom AU206 in Joensuu. ISYY offers small snacks for the participants. The hangout in March starts a short pilot project (2 months) of the new Finnish Friend concept in Joensuu and based on the pilot, the activities will kick off in autumn semester 2023 on both campuses.

ISYY organises Association Days on 29.-30.3.2023 at Joensuu campus (Carelia Lobby) and 29.3.2023 at Kuopio Campus (Snellmania lobby). Come and find out what ISYY and associations close to it have to offer. It’s also possible that you’ll find some new activities from Association Days! ISYY Association Days are open for everybody and there’s no entrance fee. You can also purchase new overall patches.

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes.

Give us feedback about Winter Classic and win

The Winter Classic of ice hockey was played on Wednesday 8th of February between allstar student teams of the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and Karelia University of Applied Sciences (Karelia UAS). We are now collecting feedback from the spectators. You can also participate in the raffle by leaving your contact information at the end of the feedback form.

Feedback form is open between 24.2.- 5.3.2023.

Let’s move with Iita and Riina

A low level exercise group for those who want to exercise lightly and with a good mood. The class is suitable for everyone and refreshes the feeling after a day of study or work. The themes of the class vary from body conditioning to light exercise. Exercises are performed varying to the beat of the music and against time. You can participate every time or when it suits you!

A valid SYKETTÄ sticker is not required to participate and you don’t have to enroll on the class. You can just arrive on time. Bring your own exercise mat, indoor exercise equipment and a water bottle.

Communal walk 14.3.

Is there anything better than fresh air, activity and great company?

Next communal walk is on Tuesday 14th of March at 4 pm. The departure starts from Alkukivet statue in front of Carelia. The walk lasts about one hour, after which the group heads for a warm cup of coffee or tea.

Please prepare for the weather with appropriate equipment. The walk is open to everyone and does not require an advance registration.

Board game night 15.3.

The BRIDGES project and Joensuu Board Gamers club will organise together a board game night on Wednesday 15th of March at 5 pm forward in Suvas meeting room (Suvantokatu 6).

During the evening, we play different board games. Everyone is welcome to play, whether you are a beginner or an expert. There is no pre-registration to the event. The games can be found on site, but you can also bring your own favorite game. Participation is free of charge and you will receive the BRIDGES project overall badge as a memory of the evening.

Welcome to Joensuu's "Coffee & Friends" events!

During the spring, the “Coffee & Friends” is organized every Tuesday 4pm-6pm in Aurora’s AU110 room. “Coffee & Friends” as a meeting place opens up the opportunity to get to know other students in a relaxed atmosphere. This is the students' living room, where you can rest and enjoy coffee and a snack. There will be a changing program. You can come to “Coffee & Friends” alone or with a friend.

Would you like a new friend for studying, hobby or exercise?

ISYY, Student2Student and SYKETTÄ's service gives you the opportunity to find a friend/friends for active study, hobbies or exercise. The service brings together three different areas (study buddy, hobby buddy and sports buddy), each of which has its own application. You can choose one area to fill out the application according to your own needs, or if you wish, you can fill out and search for friends from all areas.

A possible bus drivers’ strike may stop most of the bus traffic between 1.3.2023-10.3.2023!

If the negotiating parties cannot reach an agreement, traffic will stop on the 3 and 6–15 bus lines.

The following bus lines will operate on Mon-Fri from 7 am till 5 pm once per hour:

1 Utra-city centre-Hukanhauta
2 Utra-city centre-Marjala
4 Kulho-city centre-Onttola

Help YUFE organize an international meeting in Joensuu!

UEF is a member of the YUFE (Young Universities for the Future of Europe) alliance, which includes nine European universities and two non-academic partners. UEF degree students can apply to YUFE Student Journey and take courses from the member universities – either virtually or by going on Erasmus+ exchange to a YUFE university. For more information about YUFE, visit the website.

YUFE alliance organizes a joint meeting for several of its working groups at Joensuu campus on 12-16 June. We expect approx. 80 participants, representing all YUFE partners. It is a great chance to meet and network with people from other YUFE universities! We are looking for student volunteers to help us with the practical parts of this event. If you are interested, fill this form by 1 March. If you want, you can also get a Civic Star for your efforts!

If you need further information, contact yufe@uef.fi. A training event for the volunteers will be held in May.

Student tutors for new international students: application period has been extended until 15 March!

As a student tutor, you will get to know new students, can practice your language skills (English or otherwise) and you will also get credits! Tutoring before your exchange studies is a good way to get oriented and practice networking, and tutoring after your exchange is an opportunity to continue gaining international experience during your studies. Nyyti Chat (28.2)

Nyyti’s Chat is a place for sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences. Chats will cover subjects surrounding issues that affect student’s daily lives. This group chat is meant for all students over the age of 18. Chat is also anonymous and free of charge. There will always be Nyyti’s volunteers or employees at the chat with you. Always remember to behave according to the priciples for a safer space.

ESN Joensuu Carnival Party (3.3)

Let your wigs, extravagant dresses, and superhero capes ready, because ESN is bringing the ultimate carnival party to town!

Join us on Friday, March 3rd from 7-10 pm at Bepop. Dress up as whatever you like and let your imagination run wild! And that's not all! We'll also have a photocall set up at the party, so you can capture all your amazing and hilarious looks.

But, wait! Don't have a costume yet? No worries, we can make your life easier! Throughout the week leading up to the party, we'll be sharing our favorite second-hand stores around town where you can find the perfect pieces to complete your costume. Follow ESN Joensuu on Instagram to learn more!

Friday Game Nights (10.3)

Pohjois-Karjalan Seta and Setlementti organize game nights ever other Friday. Game nights are open for everyone and suitable for every age. Come by yourself or bring a friend or a whole squad. You can bring your own games or play all games available in meeting place. We follow the principles of safer spaces.

Multicultural Coffee by the Red Cross (every other Sunday)

Do you want to meet new people? Have you been feeling a bit lonely, or are you finding it hard to find a community? Come join us for our multicultural coffee, whether you are a refugee, a student, a local, or an immigrant. Come join us at Torikatu 17 every alternate Sunday, starting 12.02, for an afternoon of games, good conversation, and coffee. This is the perfect opportunity to make new friends and build community!

What is my Student Association?

Student Associations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Associations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you!

Each Student Association has their own overalls colour, they are listed in ISYY's student calendars! You can watch this Youtube video to learn more about the Finnish higher education overall tradition.

Information about Weekly Feed

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself.

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.
