This week we are starting our Language Café activities so join us for an info session today at 4.15 pm via Google Meet if you didn't attend the info at 9 am!

Language Cafés are a great way to learn basics of a new language and meet other students. The idea of the Cafés is that your fellow students teach you their mother tongue in small groups and in a relaxed environment. UEF students can get ECTS credits (1 ECTS/participant and 2 ECTS/teacher) for participating and completing a few small assignment! Read more about the Language Cafés on ISYY's website here.

Improve your language skills!

ISYY’s Language Cafés are starting again! Do you want to learn new languages, brush up your old skills and meet new people or teach your native language? We have the perfect opportunity for you!

In a Language Café, your peers and friends are your teachers and at the same time, they can be your students. When participating in Language Café activities, you can also earn ECTS credits by either attending or organising a Language Café (UEF students only) and by submitting a few small assignments to Moodle.

If you are interested in teaching a Language Café, fill in the Google Forms linked here and let us know which languages you would be interested in teaching! You can sign up in Google Forms until Thursday 22nd of September 12 pm (noon).

Leader training is on Thursday 22 September at 4.15pm on Google Meet so see you there! (We will send the link to the leader training via email to those who filled in the Google Forms.) Note that participating in the leader training does not bind you to anything! You can just attend the training and decide after that whether you want to become a leader or not.

Give us feedback about the Campus Happening and City Orienteering

Thanks to everyone who joined the Campus Happening and City Orienteering last Thursday in Joensuu and Kuopio! We hope that everyones evening was joyful and safe.

We are now collecting feedback to improve our events in future. By filling the form you can participate in a raffle where we give out UEF canvas bags.

ISYY is organising the traditional Association Days in October, in which Student Associations, ISYY clubs and Campus Associations present their activities and events! ISYY Association Days are open for everybody and there's no entrance fee.

The event will be held on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th of October from 10 am to 2 pm in Joensuu Carelia lobby and on Wednesday 12th of October from 10 am to 2 pm in Kuopio Snellmania lobby (1st floor). Come and find out what ISYY and associations close to it have to offer.

It’s also possible that you’ll find some new activities or maybe new hobbies from Association Days!

We warmly welcome all ISYY members to celebrate the 12th anniversary of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) on Saturday, 29th October 2022 in Kuopio! The Annual Celebration will be held in Hotel IsoValkeinen.

Registration for the Annual Celebration will begin on Wednesday 14th September 2022 at 12 pm and the registration is open until 30th September 2022.

ISYY organises a ‘fuksibingo’ aka Freshman Bingo to kick-start the academic year for new students. By completing a bingo you will get a unique ISYY Fuksi 2022 overall badge. The Freshman Bingo helps new students to familiarise themselves with student life and to find new communities.

Hello again! It feels like autumn is going really fast now and I've got the feeling that now is the moment to take the foot off the gas pedal, slow down and stop. It's not always easy, but the most important thing is to try. Is it easy for you to stop when you feel that life is too hectic? Luckily, you can practice it and the internet is full of different ways. I personally recommend Nyyti ry’s website, which is full of material for promoting your wellbeing. Have a relaxing new week!

Opening of the Wellbeing Week 3.10.

The Wellbeing Week of ISYY and UEF will be celebrated on October 3rd-7th 2022. This time the theme of the week is brain’s wellbeing.

The week starts with the arrival of the Finnish Kennel Club's care dogs to the campuses, at Alkukivet in Joensuu and in front of Lukema in Kuopio between 12 noon and 2 pm. According to Yle's article, pets reduce stress and relax, even if the pet is not one's own. In addition to petting the dogs, coffee and chocolate are served.

Movie night 6.10.

The Wellbeing Week’s Thursday evening will be crowned with a movie night, during which we will watch C'mon C'mon (2021), starring Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar from Joker (2019). The theme of the film is a sensitive drama that deals with the wellbeing of the mind and emotional skills. C’mon C’mon makes you laugh and cry and sometimes both at the same time. The movie is in English. Movie night is organized on 6.10. at Restaurant Kerubi from 6 pm forward. The event is open and free to UEF students and staff. Registrate to event from the link down below.

Polar night “kaamos” survival lecture 7.10.

At the end of the Wellbeing week, study psychologist Katri Ruth holds a polar night lecture called "Kaamos survival" in English from 2 pm to 3 pm on Zoom. People may be negatively affected by kaamos, and darkness can trigger depression or cause extra tiredness. The effects of polar night time on the body and mind are discussed, and ways to cope with polar night are reviewed. Note! The lecture starts exactly at 2 pm. SYKETTÄ Joensuu

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes. Physical stickers are available to purchase at the ISYY office. Spring 2022 stickers are valid until 31.8.2022. Please follow our hygiene and safety instructions

Sports Afternoon 5.10

Sports Afternoon of the Autumn 2022 is held on Wednesday 5th of August 2022 in Joensuu and Kuopio. The UEF, Karelia UAS and Savonia UAS hold a sports afternoon together and the sports afternoon is lecture-free from 12:15 pm.

SYKETTÄ Sports Services organizes the sports afternoon program, but no SYKETTÄ sticker is required to participate. It is still required to register to SYKETTÄ websites (Joensuu or Kuopio) to be able to enroll to the classes and turns. The sports afternoon program also includes all the classes on the SYKETTÄ sports calendar that day!

During the sports afternoon, a wide variety of different exercise options are available both indoors and outdoors, and arranged by external partners. Some of them are free of charge, while others include a separate fee.

Welcome to respond to the survey!

The aim of the survey is to obtain diverse information on students’ experiences and views on learning and studying in higher education. We hope that every higher education student will respond to the survey based on their own experiences of studying. Everyone’s answer is important.

The deadline for responding is 7.10.2022. Responding takes around 20-25 minutes. Answer to the survey here.

The survey is part of the Evaluation of the state and reform of higher education pedagogy, which is implemented by the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC). Some of the answers may be used in the Evaluation of Government’s key projects for higher education 2017–2022. Once the evaluation has been completed, the responses will be archived, and they can be handed over for research use. The answers that will be archived will be anonymised. The results of the survey will be reported in a way that makes it impossible to identify individual respondents.

Feeling confused, exhausted, or anxious? Needing a shoulder to lean on? Student2Student peer counsellors are here to support you in all situations.

Starting or returning to your studies can sometimes be overwhelming. If you feel you want to talk to someone, anonymously if you wish, Student2Student is the place to go. The trained peer counsellors can help you find further support or the answer to a question on your mind. Discussions are confidential and free of charge.

You can reach Student2Student from Thursday the 1st of September onwards via telephone (+358 29 445 8580) or via the chat in Kamu. The service is open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. You can leave a callback request by calling the line anytime, and a peer counsellor will call you when the service is next open. More info in Kamu:

Nyyti's chat: Studying with Learning Disabilities (27.9)

Nyyti’s Chat is a place for sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences. Chats will cover subjects surrounding issues that affect student’s daily lives. This group chat is meant for all students over the age of 18. Chat is also anonymous and free of charge. There will always be Nyyti’s volunteers or employees at the chat with you. Always remember to behave according to the priciples for a safer space.

If you are new to Finnish language, start with our beginner’s course, Finnish 1A. Finnish 1A is a MOOC-style self-study course and open for all international UEF students. Registration is open throughout the academic year, and you can start this course as soon as you register in Peppi. If you have studied Finnish before, check out our Finnish 1B – Finnish 4 courses to find a course suitable for your skill level!

Travel card lottery for new students

Take part in lottery, where you can win a personal JOJO Waltti travel card and one season ticket (30 days). You can participate if you study in Joensuu at the University of Eastern Finland or at Karelia University of Applied Sciences. The period of the lottery is 5.9. – 25.9.2022.

The lottery terms:

You can participate by filling this internet form (only once): Waltti-arvonta
You study for the first year
You are a full-time student (minimum of 25 hours a week) and studying towards a degree. The length of the academic year must be the minimum of 8 months (for foreign exchange and degree students minimum of 3 months).
You must claim your prize at the latest 30.11.2022. You must certificate you studying by your student certificate. The prize is personal, you cannot transfer it forward.

The winners will receive an email and further information how to claim the prize in the beginning of October. This lottery is organized by the city of Joensuu.

What is my Student Association?

Student Associations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Associations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you!

“Keys to Well-being – 5 Steps towards Future Work Skills” online trainings are designed to improve self-management skills, which are increasingly important in the changing world of work and study. Transformation of work requires new skills and competences: time and self-management skills, resilience and adaptability, collaboration skills, new ways of thinking, taking care of well-being and finding meaning in our work.

The online trainings consist of short videos as well as in-depth trainings. The trainings can be accessed flexibly at any time that suits you. They are free of charge to UEF staff and students, and they are available until January 31, 2023. This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself.

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.
