  • UEF Info Market is tomorrow 4 September from 1pm to 4pm in Carelia lobby, it's a great way to get to know different organisations and active operators within the university (such as ISYY and our international club JEIS). 
  • Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off Event is on Thursday 5 September between 2pm and 5pm and after that you can explore the city with your peers in City Orienteering. Sign-up for City Orienteering is open now, read more about the events in this newsletter.

 In the beginning of September we will kick-off the new academic year! 

And what does that mean?

Academic Year Kick-Off & City Orienteering are events that start the academic year at the University of Eastern Finland. The events are held on Thursday 5 September 2024 on both campuses at the same time.

Learn more about the event and get ready to kick-start this academic year together with the whole university community!

Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off event

The Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off event will gather together students and staff of UEF and Karelia UAS. The stage program will kick off with a welcome speech and greetings from the students, followed by DJ Kiri ja Finnish artist Kiki energizing the crowd. In addition to the stage program, there will be local associations’ booths where students can get familiar with different organizations and services available in the campus city. City Orienteering - registration opens soon!

Right after the Student Blast starts ISYY’s City Orienteering which is organised especially for the new students. Teams will go around the campus city and complete fun tasks at the orienteering points. The students will get to know each other as well as the campus city. You will meet e.g. student associations and ISYY Clubs at the orienteering points!

 
 
 

Registration

The registration for new students begins on 2 September at 3 pm in Kide.app. A tutor (or a student from the freshman group if the tutor doesn’t participate in the Orienteering) will register the group of new students to the event. 

The registration for continuing students begins in Kide.app on Tuesday 3 September at 3 pm in Kide.App. There are a limited amount of group tickets, so be fast! A group ticket for continuing students costs 30€.

Familiarise yourself with student life with ISYY's Freshman Bingo!

ISYY's Freshman Bingo kick-starts the academic year for our new students. By completing at least one bingo row, you'll get an ISYY FUKSI overall patch and you can take part in the Freshman Bingo Raffle. There is a limited amount of overall patches on both campuses, so it is a good idea to take this chance quickly! You can save the bingo sheet to yourself electronically from ISYY website or you can collect a printed bingo sheet from ISYY office. The Freshman Bingo must be completed by 28 November 2024 at 3 pm!

Join Language Café activities!

Do you want to learn new languages, brush up your old skills and meet new people or teach your native language? We have the perfect opportunity for you! 

In a Language Café, your peers and friends are your teachers and at the same time, they can be your students. When participating in Language Café activities, you can also earn ECTS credits by attending (1 ECTS) and/or organising a Language Café (2 ECTS) and by submitting a few small assignments to Moodle.

Join the Language Café info on Wednesday 18 September from 8:30 am to 9 am on Google Meet to find out more!

Are you interested in teaching your own Language Café? Leader training is right after the info session on Wednesday 18 September from 9:15 am to 10:15 am on Google Meet so see you there! All Language Café leaders have to attend the leader training, so you can just attend the training and decide after that whether you want to become a leader or not.

Sober Bingo & Disco ticket sale starts tomorrow!

Sober Bingo & Disco will gather higher education students in Joensuu to Kerubi’s Kellari on Wednesday 18 September to play bingo, dance, and relax after the busiest freshman weeks. Bingo prizes include treats and Kerubi’s concert tickets!

Ticket types:
Bingo and Disco 5 € (+ Kide.app service fee)
Only Disco 3 € (+ Kide.app service fee)

Ticket sale starts on Kide.app on Wednesday 4 September at 10 am. Ticket includes the event's exclusive Sober Disco vol. 3 overall patch! Please note that the cloakroom fee is not included in the ticket price.

Tour de Itä-Suomi cycling event comes to Joensuu on 22 September

Cycling event Tour de Itä-Suomi will kick-start the autumn season on Saturday 21 in Kuopio and Sunday 22 September in Joensuu. Offering two cycling routes of different lengths in both Joensuu and Kuopio, the event is not a competition — you can pedal at your own pace. You will need your own bike and a cycling helmet.

The start and finish of both the longer and shorter routes are located in both cities on the university campus near the ISYY office. 

Registration starts tomorrow Wednesday 4 September 2024 at 9 am! The participation fee for the cycling event is 5 € for ISYY members and 15 € for others. To register for the event, please register in advance on Kide.app.

ISYY's Hobby Buddy Service will continue this autumn!

ISYY's Hobby Buddy Service will continue this autumn! The service has been operational from 2021 to 2023 as a part of the BRIDGES project, and due to the positive feedback received it will be continued in the upcoming academic year.

The service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. The process works as follows: a student looking for a Hobby Buddy fills out a form available on ISYY's website, and we will get in touch when a matching buddy is found. You can search for a Hobby Buddy for one or multiple hobbies.

If you are looking for a friend to exercise with, please check out the Sports Buddy Service of SYKETTÄ.

ISYY's Student Benefit Coffee Break 16.9.

Welcome to the Student Benefit and Advocacy Coffee Break on both campuses 16.9. at 3.30 pm!

All ISYY members are welcome to have a low-threshold discussion about current issues related to student interests and advocacy with the actors of ISYY's advocacy sector.

We hope to see people in charge of the interests advocacy of the Student Associations in particular, so that we can discuss as diversely as possible about the belongings, worries and sorrows of students from different fields, as well as development ideas.

Coffee sessions will be held simultaneously on both campuses on Monday 16 September at 3.30 pm in Joensuu in seminar room N106.

ISYY offices have extended opening hours  until 19 September. ISYY offices are open: 

2 September - 19 September:

  • Mon, Tue, Thu 10-15, Wed 12-16
  • Friday 6 September 10-14
  • Friday 13 September at 10-14

20 September onwards ISYY office will return to the regular opening hours:

  • Mon, Tue, Thu 10-12 and 13-15
  • Wednesday 12-16
  • Friday: closed

Meet ISYY's international club - Joensuu's Exchange and International Students (JEIS)!

JEIS is the international club of ISYY that organises  lots of events, trips and activities both on and off campus for all! 

JEIS introduces Finnish culture and lifestyle to international students and give Finnish students an opportunity to gain international experiences by arranging diverse events and activities. 

All ISYY members are automatically members of JEIS and very welcome to our events! You can prove your JEIS and ISYY membership with a student card (Frank App).

SYKETTÄ - University Sports

SYKETTÄ sports service is for the students and staff of the University of Eastern Finland and the Karelia University of Applied Sciences. SYKETTÄ offers a diverse and inexpensive sports calendar with something for everyone. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes. Everybody moves their own way!

Free trial weeks and SYKETTÄ appro

Free trial period and SYKETTÄ appro will be held during the first two weeks of September (2. - 15.9.2024.). All new users must register on the SYKETTÄ website before they can use the services. During the free trial period, you can enroll on the classes available on the sports calendar without a valid sports sticker. Users must enroll on each class beforehand during the free trial period.

SYKETTÄ Appro passports are available from ISYY office and at SYKETTÄ stand on UEF infomarket on 4.9. at Carelia. 

SYKETTÄ wishes all new and old users a sporty autumn!

Returning Tikkarinne key fobs

If you still have a key fob for the Tikkarinne Gym, please return it to ISYY's office by Friday 6 September at the latest.

If your key fob is missing, please let us know so we can close it.  We will not refund the deposit for lost or repatriated key fobs after 6 September.

 

Portti54 - gym open days

We will organise open days at the Portti54 gym on Friday 6 September and 13 September from 10 am to 6 pm. SYKETTÄ employees on site between 11 am and 3 pm giving training tips and guiding the use of equipment and devices. There is also a small snack available.

Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2024–2025 will be held on 5 September

The Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2024–2025 will be held on Kuopio campus on Thursday, 5 September 2024, at 1.15 p.m. in the Great Lecture Hall, Snellmania building. Welcome!

The Student and Learning Services' customer service opening hours are extended until13 September 2024

19 August – 13 September 2024 the Student and Learning Services’ customer service desk and phone service opening hours are extended. During this time both the customer service desk and phone service are open Mon–Fri from 10 am to 3 pm.

From 16 September 2024 onward the Student and Learning Services’ customer service will return to the regular opening hours.

Library opening hours in the autumn term

Library offices will move to the opening hours of the autumn term on Monday, September 2, 2024.

Joensuu and Kuopio Campus Library facilities are open between 8–18 on weekdays and 10–14 on Saturdays. The first hours of weekday mornings are self-service hours. From Monday to Saturday customer service starts at 10 a.m.

24/7 Self-study facilities are open normally for the rest of the year, also during holidays.

Get to know the campus by playing campus orienteering!

Campus orienteering will help you to find the student services and familiarize yourself with the campus buildings even before your studies begin.

Campus orienteering consists of checkpoints that can be navigated either alone or together with your fellow students at the university. Some of the checkpoints also include small volunteer assignments.

Campus Orienteering is open until the end of September 2024. You can utilize the Campus Orienteering when you have registered as UEF student and have the UEF username.

JEIS Get to Know Each Other -party (12.9)

The new semester is here! Whether you have just arrived in Joensuu and you are looking to have a good time from the very beginning, or you are continuing your studies here, this event is just for you!

JEIS welcomes you to our Get to Know Each Other Party which - as the name suggests - is the perfect way to have a great time and make new friends! We will have the whole of Bepop for ourselves on Thursday 12 September between 7 pm and 10 pm. There will be a Get to Know Each Other -bingo, karaoke and a DJ! The fun times continue through the night even after the place opens to the public. Psst.. Make sure to come early so you don’t miss our bingo - there’s a good chance you can win some amazing prizes!

JEIS General Meeting (17.9)

ISYY's international club Joensuu's Exchange and International Students (JEIS in short) is looking for new board members and active members for the autumn semester 2024! So if you would like to apply, help by voting to elect the new board and also know a bit more about our beloved international club (while eating snacks), you are more than welcome to join us in the General Meeting on Tuesday 17 September 2024 at 5pm in room AG100 (Agora building on campus). We will also vote for the 2025 action plan and budget in this General Meeting.

JEIS is made up of the board, the active members and the regular members. If you would like to help out with planning and creating the events, you can either sign up as an active member and help out whenever you can, or become a board member to have a little more responsibility.

 
 
 

Open board positions for autumn semester:

  • President is the glue keeping our lovely club going - they are responsible for example calling all meetings, preparing agendas and making sure everything runs smoothly. As a President of an ISYY club, ISYY membership is required to apply for this position.
  • Vice President acts as the left hand of the President. Vice President can for example run meetings if a President is not able to attend. ISYY membership is required to apply for this position.
  • Treasurer & Trip Coordinator & Secretary handles all monetary issues and keeps contact with Timetravels
  • 1-2 Communication Managers are responsible for all marketing and communication, especially in social media
  • 1-2 Event Managers coordinate, plan and execute all events
  • Photographer and Graphic Designer take photos and design the visuals for marketing events
 

How can I apply?

The elected board will be active for the autumn semester 2024. We will train all of our new board members, so there's no need to worry if you don't know everything!

If you would like to apply for one or more positions in the board, please prepare a ONE MINUTE SPEECH telling about yourself and why you should be chosen for the role. If you are not able to participate and would still like to run for the position, you can send a one minute long video to us where you tell us why you should be elected at jeis@isyy.fi.

Psst..! If board member duties are not for you but you'd like to help with organising events, you can also join JEIS as an active member in the General Meeting.

Remember to take your Frank student card or JEIS membership card with you if you want to vote or apply to become a board member of JEIS!

Flea Market (9.9.)

Did you find unused treasures while cleaning? You can sell them in the first interdisciplinary flea market of the academic year!

On Monday 9.9. at 6-8 pm for all university and college students in Educa, lecture hall E200.

Anything can be sold in the flea market, from clothes to dishes and other objects. Handicrafts are also welcome!

A stall can be booked for 5€, for Opossumi ry members the price is 3€.

Free entry! Come and give useful items a new home.

SnacksAppro by ELSA Joensuu ry (19.9.)

SnacksAppro in Joensuu 19.9.2024! The event is similar to a traditional Appro- event, where participants go around different restaurants and collect stamps, sometimes called bar-hopping. In this event the locations are different kinds of cafes/diners and the emphasis is on salty and sweet snacks. The event is for all students. Tickets are sold in Kide.App.

(Food)encounters in Rantapuisto (14.9.)

What?

  • A community food tourism event in the centre of Joensuu, combining Restaurant Day and the Eat with locals theme. 
  • Sat 14. Sep 2024 at 11:00 - 14:00
  • The event will help people from other cultures to integrate into the community and raise local awareness of other food cultures. The aim is to create a nice and relaxed event with food at its heart. 

For whom?

The event is aimed at local and national students studying in North Karelia, immigrants, multicultural families, food travellers, people interested in different food cultures and traditions and lovers of good food.

How?

  • A long dining table with benches will be set up in the event area, tables will be lined.

  • The event is free of charge, no reservations needed. You can also bring your own picnic blanket and sit on the grass. Participants can bring small flags or other table decorations related to their own culture.

  • The idea is to meet new people and different cultures and enjoy food together (bought from the event, ordered from a restaurant or prepared home and served picnic style). It is also an opportunity to bring your own culture to the wider community, for example by performing traditional music, dance, clothing or holding small workshops.

Students pondering about their future directions or seeking traineeships and employment are troubled by many questions. Nevertheless, don’t worry! Practical guidance, knowledge and support is there for you on the career planning and job seeking courses offered by UEF Career Services.

You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.
