ISYY offices have extended opening hours in August and September

ISYY offices have extended opening hours between 30 August - 19 September. ISYY offices are open: 

August:

  • Friday 30 August 10-14

2 September - 19 September:

  • Mon, Tue, Thu 10-15, Wed 12-16
  • Friday 6 September 10-14
  • Friday 13 September at 10-14

20 September onwards ISYY office will return to the regular opening hours:

  • Mon, Tue, Thu 10-12 and 13-15
  • Wednesday 12-16
  • Friday: closed

Changes in ISYY staff

ISYY's Communications Planner Ada Hyytiäinen has moved on to the new challenges. During the years Ada has operated both in positions of trust, such as in the ISYY Board and ISYY Council, and now over 3 years as a staff member.

Thank you Ada for all or your excellent work at our Student Union and best of luck for the future adventures.

Maiju Laukkanen has started as ISYY's new Communications Specialist on 22 June. Previously Maiju has worked as e.g. Membership Service Specialist substitute at Joensuu campus.

 In the beginning of September we will kick-off the new academic year! 

And what does that mean?

Academic Year Kick-Off and City Orienteering are events that start the academic year at the University of Eastern Finland. The events are held on the same date with the UEF Opening Ceremony, on Thursday 5 September 2024. The event will be held on both campuses at the same time.

Learn more about the event and get ready to kick-start this academic year together with the whole university community!

Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off event

The Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off event will gather together students and staff of UEF and Karelia UAS. The stage program will kick off with a welcome speech and greetings from the students, followed by DJ Kiri ja Finnish artist Kiki energizing the crowd. In addition to the stage program, there will be local associations’ booths where students can get familiar with different organizations and services available in the campus city.

 
 
 

 

City Orienteering

Right after the Student Blast starts ISYY’s City Orienteering which is organised especially for the new students. Teams will go around the campus city and complete fun tasks at the orienteering points. The students will get to know each other as well as the campus city. You will meet e.g. student associations and ISYY Clubs at the orienteering points!

 
 
     
 
 

ISYY's Hobby Buddy Service will continue this autumn!

ISYY's Hobby Buddy Service will continue this autumn! The service has been operational from 2021 to 2023 as a part of the BRIDGES project, and due to the positive feedback received it will be continued in the upcoming academic year.

The service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. The process works as follows: a student looking for a Hobby Buddy fills out a form available on ISYY's website, and we will get in touch when a matching buddy is found. You can search for a Hobby Buddy for one or multiple hobbies.

If you are looking for a friend to exercise with, please check out the Sports Buddy Service of SYKETTÄ.

Loan Sports and Hobby Equipment!

Did you know that ISYY has a miscellaneous selection of different equipment to loan for sports and hobby activities? Whether you are going to play badminton, or Finnish yard game Mölkky with you friends, we have the equipment for you.

Come to the ISYY office, explore our assortment, and maybe try something completely new. The choice is yours!

 
 
 

 
  • What? A large selection of equipment for sports and hobby activities. We have e.g. snowshoes, badminton rackets and discs for frisbee golf. The complete list of available equipment and board games can be found on our website.
  • Who can loan? All ISYY members, SYKETTÄ users with valid stickers, and in Joensuu members Joensuu's Exchange and International Students (JEIS)
  • Price? Borrowing is free!
  • How long can I keep the equipment? The loan time is one (1) week. Return the equipment to the ISYY office.
  • How can I borrow? Come to the ISYY Joensuu or Kuopio office, choose the equipment you want to borrow, and fill in the electronic loan form by reading the QR code at the customer service desk.

Free air mattresses for students

ISYY received a large amount of single air mattresses and now they are distributed to students free of charge. You can come and get your air mattress from the ISYY office during the opening hours. You can use a pump to inflate your air mattress at the office.

SYKETTÄ - University Sports

SYKETTÄ sports service is for the students and staff of the University of Eastern Finland and the Karelia University of Applied Sciences. SYKETTÄ offers a diverse and inexpensive sports calendar with something for everyone. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes.

Autumn 2024 Sports Calendar is published!

Autumn 2024 SYKETTÄ sports calendar was published on Friday 16.8. Sports calendar might get updates and minor changes during August and September. Autumn season starts on Sunday 1.9.2024.

Free trial period for SYKETTÄ services are online on 2.9.-15.9. and SYKETTÄ appro is available simultaneously. Appro passports are available from ISYY office starting on Monday 26.8. and at SYKETTÄ stand on UEF infomarket on 4.9. at Carelia.

Get to know the campus by playing campus orienteering!

Campus orienteering will help you to find the student services and familiarize yourself with the campus buildings even before your studies begin.
Campus orienteering consists of checkpoints that can be navigated either alone or together with your fellow students at the university. Some of the checkpoints also include small volunteer assignments.

Campus Orienteering is already available and it is open until the end of September 2024. You can utilize the Campus Orienteering when you have registered as UEF student and have the UEF username.

New student, get to know digital tools and services with Digistartti!

In order to begin your studies, it is important that you familiarise yourself with the UEF digital services with the help of Digistartti during the summer even before your studies start. Digistartti helps you get to know the UEF digital study environments and tools.

You can only complete the assignments by logging in with your UEF account. This means that you must be registered at the university and you must have activated your UEF account beforehand.

The Student and Learning Services' customer service opening hours are extended 19 August – 13 September 2024

19 August – 13 September 2024 the Student and Learning Services’ customer service desk and phone service opening hours are extended. During this time both the customer service desk and phone service are open Mon–Fri from 10 am to 3 pm.

From 16 September 2024 onward the Student and Learning Services’ customer service will return to the regular opening hours.

The UEF eNaBlS team invites students to participate in a survey!

eNaBlS project focuses on developing learning skills in environmental sustainability, particularly in biodiversity and Nature Based Solutions (NBS). The aim is to develop new teaching and learning methods and to strengthen the integration of the NBS concept in universities and vocational schools.

The survey investigates Europeans’ attitudes towards biodiversity and knowledge of Nature Based Solutions.

Nyyti's chats for this autumn have started!

Nyyti ry promotes the mental health and ability to study of students. The organisation provide students and learning communities with information, support and activities for mental wellbeing and coping. Nyyti’s Chat is a place for sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences. Chats will cover subjects surrounding issues that affect student’s daily lives. This group chat is meant for all students over the age of 18. Chat is also anonymous and free of charge.

Around a shared table – The experience of Koli and the flavors of Nature

Welcome to celebrate the North Karelian County Day along with Finnish Nature Day in the national landscapes of Koli! The event takes place in Nature Center Ukko at Koli, where the participants may enjoy the exhibitions and taste the treasures of our forests and waters via a tasting menu.

The free event includes:

  • Tasting menu in Cafe Eväsretket, put together from the treasures and delicacies of North Karelia, from the lakes, forests and nature. 
  • Free shared transportation from Joensuu. Number of participants is also limited, attending is only trough sign-up in advance. 

Sign Up: Registration in advance is required for the event (exhibitions, movie showing, tasting menu). Sign up before 22.8.2024. Registration can be done in Järven Taiga Shop in Market Hall in Joensuu.

Country Market and Karelian Gourmet will be held at Joensuu Market Square on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Different vendors will gather to Joensuu Marketplace to sell local produce and delicacies. 

 

 
 
     
 
 

Salsa by the Pier

Laiturisalsat (’salsa at the pier’) continue the season until 28th of August. So you're all welcome to join Laiturisalsat by the river every Wednesday at 6-8pm!

Note that we have to consider the weather conditions. If laiturisalsa evening will be cancelled, it will be announced on the website and FB site.

What: Social dancing with music provided by SdE’s own DJs

When: Every Wednesday at 6-8p.m (until 28.8.2024)

Where: At the pier by the river, called Cederbergin aukio

Recruitment and networking event Talent Boost Summit 2024 in Lappeenranta on 12 November

The free recruitment and networking event Talent Boost Summit 2024 will take place this year on 12 November in Lappeenranta City Theatre. If you can’t attend the event on-site in Lappeenranta, you have a chance to follow the speech and panel portions of the program through a livestream.

By signing up and attending the event on-site in Lappeenranta, you will get an exquisite opportunity to discuss career opportunities with companies in Finland. In addition, both employers and talents will have a chance to make two-minute pitches and possibly continue networking at the TalentMatch event after the main program. (Unfortunately, TalentMatch event is not available for online attendees.)

The morning program will include interesting speeches and panel discussions from international students and recruiting companies about their experiences in an international working environment. You are warmly welcome to attend both morning and afternoon portions of the event.

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.
