The first newsletter of the new academic year is here! I hope you have enjoyed the summer and have now recharged your batteries to face the autumn and the beginning of the semester.

Exceptions in office opening hours

There will be some exceptions in ISYY office opening hours. This week ISYY offices are open only from Monday to Wednesday, which means that our offices are closed on Thursday.

On the last week of August and on the first two weeks of September the offices are at your service also on Fridays.

Exceptions:

Friday 30 August open 10-14
Friday 6 September open 10-14
Friday 13 September open 10-14

Familiar face back at the ISYY Joensuu office

ISYY’s Membership Service Specialist, Hannele, has returned to our Joensuu office since the beginning of August. You will meet Hannele when you come to get your term or SYKETTÄ sports sticker. You can also contact Hannele if you have questions considering ISYY’s membership services.

Free air mattresses for students

ISYY received a large amount of single air mattresses and now they are distributed to students free of charge. You can come and get your air mattress from the ISYY office during the opening hours. You can use a pump to inflate your air mattress at the office.

In the beginning of September we will kick-off the new academic year!

And what does that mean?

Academic Year Kick-Off and City Orienteering are events that start the academic year at the University of Eastern Finland. The events are held on the same date with the UEF Opening Ceremony, on Thursday 5 September 2024. The event will be held on both campuses at the same time.

Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off event

The Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off event will gather together students and staff of UEF and Karelia UAS. The stage program will kick off with a welcome speech and greetings from the students, followed by DJ Kiri ja Finnish artist Kiki energizing the crowd. In addition to the stage program, there will be local associations’ booths where students can get familiar with different organizations and services available in the campus city.

City Orienteering

Right after the Student Blast starts ISYY’s City Orienteering which is organised especially for the new students. Teams will go around the campus city and complete fun tasks at the orienteering points. The students will get to know each other as well as the campus city. You will meet e.g. student associations and ISYY Clubs at the orienteering points!

ISYY's autumn is full of different activities, like events, theme weeks and other important dates, that you might want to write to your calendar. We will update the calendar during the autumn, and the best way to keep up with our events is to follow our newsletters and the event calendar that can be found from the ISYY.fi front page.

Registration for the next Academic Year ends on 15.9.

Hey continuing student! Registration for the UEF Academic Year 2024–2025 has started. Registration periods for the next academic year are:

Registration for the year 2024–2025 begins on 1 June and ends on 15 September 2024.
Registration ONLY for the spring semester 2025 is 1.11.2024–15.1.2025.

When you register as a present student and you pay the ISYY membership fee at the same time, you’ll get all of our member services also for the next academic year. ISYY membership will help you during your studies, e.g. with our interest advocacy services. Get to know all of our member services by going through our website, and you’ll make to most of your membership!

SYKETTÄ - University Sports

SYKETTÄ sports service is for the students and staff of the University of Eastern Finland and the Karelia University of Applied Sciences. SYKETTÄ offers a diverse and inexpensive sports calendar with something for everyone. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes.

Autumn 2024 Sports Calendar

Autumn 2024 SYKETTÄ sports calendar will be published on Friday 16.8. Sports calendar might get updates and minor changes during August and September.

Students pondering about their future directions or seeking traineeships and employment are troubled by many questions. Nevertheless, don’t worry! Practical guidance, knowledge and support is there for you on the career planning and job seeking courses offered by UEF Career Services.

New student, get to know digital tools and services with Digistartti!

In order to begin your studies, it is important that you familiarise yourself with the UEF digital services with the help of Digistartti during the summer even before your studies start. Digistartti helps you get to know the UEF digital study environments and tools.

You can only complete the assignments by logging in with your UEF account. This means that you must be registered at the university and you must have activated your UEF account beforehand.

The UEF eNaBlS team invites students to participate in a survey!

eNaBlS project focuses on developing learning skills in environmental sustainability, particularly in biodiversity and Nature Based Solutions (NBS). The aim is to develop new teaching and learning methods and to strengthen the integration of the NBS concept in universities and vocational schools.

The survey investigates Europeans’ attitudes towards biodiversity and knowledge of Nature Based Solutions.

Nyyti's chats for this autumn have started!

Nyyti ry promotes the mental health and ability to study of students. The organisation provide students and learning communities with information, support and activities for mental wellbeing and coping. Nyyti’s Chat is a place for sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences. Chats will cover subjects surrounding issues that affect student’s daily lives. This group chat is meant for all students over the age of 18. Chat is also anonymous and free of charge.

Pivo will be closed down on Sep 4th 2024

Pivo and Pivo’s student card will be closed down on Sep 4th, 2024. You can use Pivo’s student card normally until then. Make sure to activate another student card, e.g. Frank App, for the academic year 2024–2025.

You can see your information in Pivo until 3.9.2024. Do the payments, accept the payment orders and open open expenses no later than 3.9.2024. Pivo also recommends you to take out the information of possible open payment orders and open expenses in groups, so that you won't lose the information. If you don't have open expenses or student card in Pivo, you don't need to do anything.

Joen Yö pulses with culture in a way that you can feel. Joensuu's own art festival is not hidden from anyone; it happens right in the heart of the city. Lights, sound, art, science, movement, emotions, and activity—this is what Joen Yö is all about. And Joen Yö is made for everyone.

Salsa by the Pier

Laiturisalsat (’salsa at the pier’) continue the season until 28th of August. So you're all welcome to join Laiturisalsat by the river every Wednesday at 6-8pm!

Note that we have to consider the weather conditions. If laiturisalsa evening will be cancelled, it will be announced on the website and FB site.

What: Social dancing with music provided by SdE’s own DJs

When: Every Wednesday at 6-8p.m (until 28.8.2024)

Where: At the pier by the river, called Cederbergin aukio

Information about Weekly Feed

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself.

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.

If you would like to have something featured in the Weekly Feed, please send a short (max. 500 characters including spaces), informative advertisement of the event/activity in English to tiedotus@isyy.fi.
