HAPPY TUESDAY!

The last newsletter of the spring is here! Our summer break will last for June and July and the first newsletter of autumn semester will be published on Tuesday 13 August – see you then! If you want to send us material for the first newsletters, please do that by Tuesday 6 August.

Have you ever heard of the Finnish outdoor game Mölkky? This is something you want to cross off your "only in Finland"-list! The game is very simple and you can play it with as many friends as you want. The goal is to collect exactly 50 points by throwing a wooden skittle and knocking over wooden pins that have numbers from 1 to 12. ISYY members can loan the game at the ISYY office for free!

Have a relaxing summer!

Kind regards,
Salla
Coordinator of International Affairs

Finnish summer bucket list

Are you spending the summer in Finland? Would you like some ideas for activities?

After the long winter and a few winter comebacks (Finns use the word ‘takatalvi’, see description here) summer is finally approaching fast so we have collected a list of (Finnish) things for you to do in an out of your campus city this summer!

TLDR; Summer in Finland is beautiful yet painfully short, so you’d better enjoy it - here are some ideas how:

  • Check out the selection of ISYY's book exchange shelf at the ISYY office and pick up some free reading for you to enjoy at a summer cottage, in a park or at beach.
  • You can find Joensuu event calendar here for more thing to do around the city during the summer.
  • Already seen EVERYTHING in Joensuu? Why don’t you visit some nearby cities, villages or sights
    • Visit Koli or Tahko if you haven’t already
    • Check out Visit Joensuu website for all North Karelian treasures near Joensuu.
    • Have you visited the other campus city of UEF yet? Kuopio is beautiful during summer and worth a visit! See more here.
    • Ilomantsi (or Pogosta, which means ‘village’ in Karelian language) is beautiful during summer. How many wooden bear statues can you spot?
    • Parikkala sculpture park is a sight to see. It’s an outdoor sculpture park with hundreds of eccentric statues made by late artist Veijo Rönkkönen. Entry fee is 5€ and is used to maintain the park, you can pay it in cash or via Mobilepay.

The marches will take place accross Finland in different cities and all local info can be found from their own event pages. In Joensuu the march will begin at the Joensuu railway station at 2 pm on Sunday, June 2nd.
