Pride week is here!

North Karelia Pride has various events in Joensuu throughout the week. ISYY and BRIDGES are also collaborating with Pride, keep reading this newsletter to find out more!

Are you returning home and want to get rid of unnecessary items, such as kitchenware or sports equipment you might have accumulated during your exchange? Or did you do a massive spring cleaning and wish to get rid of some board games, bed sheets or towels? You can donate your unwanted glasses, mugs, plates, kitchen utensils, pots and pans, games, sheets and towels to the Student Union. Read more from the ISYY section on how to donate!

The last Weekly Feed of the spring semester will be published next week.
The last Weekly Feed of the spring semester will be published next week 24.5. After that, Weekly Feed will be on summer break and will be published again on 16.8.

There is some changes in ISYY Office opening hours before our offices will be closed for the summer holidays. Please notice, that next week on Thursday 26th May our offices are closed due to the Ascension Day.

ISYY Representative Council meeting 3/2022 on the 19th of April at 5 pm!

The ISYY Representative Council will hold its third meeting of 2022 on Thursday the 19th of May in rooms M100 (Joensuu) and SN201 (Kuopio) at 5 pm.

In the meeting, the Representative Council will, among other things, choose the new Secretary General. You can follow the meeting in the classrooms or via a stream on ISYY’s YouTube channel.

Remember to return your Survival Package on Friday 10 June at 11 am at the latest!

The semester is ending soon so here is a reminder - please return your Survival Package by Friday 10 June 11 am. You can return your package any day before the deadline within ISYY office opening hours, or on Friday 10 June between 8am and 11am at the latest.

You can return your survival package to the ISYY office (Yliopistokatu 7, Haltia building, 2nd floor).

ISYY office is open:
Mon, Tue and Thu 10-15
Wed 12-16
Fri (closed), but open on Friday 10.6 between 8am-11am

When you return the package make sure that:
• all items listed in the pink slip are inside the box
• the items are clean
• the box is clean
We will give you back your 30€ deposit when you return your survival package if the items are inside the box and intact.

Don’t know what to do with extra stuff accumulated during your exchange? Donate them to ISYY!

Are you returning to your home and want to get rid of unnecessary items, such as kitchenware or sports equipment? You can donate your unwanted glasses, mugs, plates, kitchen utensils, pots and pans to the Student Union. We also take bed sheets and towels. We'll use them to make more survival packages for the next incoming exchange students. Or if you have bought ice skates and don't have enough space in your luggage to take them with you, you can donate them to us so other students can use them next winter.

If you want to donate something to ISYY, you can bring the items to ISYY's offices during our opening hours. Check out ISYY's office location and opening hours here.

Please note that we accept only items that are still usable so nothing broken please!

In case you wish to donate your clothes (that are clean and in good condition), you can leave them in bags to UFF’s collection points. You can find the collection bins on map from this link.

You can also leave clothes and other items to Kontti which is run by Finnish Red Cross. In Joensuu, Kontti is located in Voimatie 10.

The North Karelia's Pride week is this week!

Equality and transparency are important values for ISYY. ISYY is organising the Pride with Seta on Saturday 21st of May and encourages all its members to take part in the Pride procession and park celebration, as well as to wear student overalls to form a rainbow. The BRIDGES project also organises an excursion from Kuopio campus to Joensuu, so that students in Kuopio have the opportunity to participate in the Pride.

At the park festival from 4pm forward, there is live music and an opportunity to meet other students in ISYY's own picnic area. The first 100 get ISYY's Pride Hemmo overall patch. In addition, there is a possibility to apply as a helper to the event and as a thank you for helping the helpers receive e.g. a meal from restaurant Kerubi.

Apply to be a helper to Joensuu's Pride!

ISYY is organising North Karelia Pride with Seta in Joensuu on the Saturday 21st of May and needs helpers to the Pride procession and at the park party in Ilosaari. As a thank you for your help, you get free dinner from Restaurant Kerubi, a certificate, which is a great addition to your CV, and a Pride Hemmo overall patch. In addition, you can also enjoy the party itself, as the helpers' shifts are divided into two shifts. The shift lasts only 3 hours.

As a helper, it is possible to work in the following positions:

Transporting audio equipment
Assembling AV equipment
Maintaining general cleanliness at park party
Photographing the procession and park party
Monitoring the mood of the event as a bouncer

In the application, you can wish yourself a shift and a job. The application period is running from 3rd to 17th of May.

Suggest activities for Campus Happening!

We have started planning the kick-off event of the new academic year, Campus Happening (Kampusrysäys in Finnish), and now you have a chance to influence the event’s programme. Would you be interested, for example, in riding a mechanical bull or jumping in a bouncy castle? What would you like to do at the Campus Happening on Thursday 8 September 2022? Leave your suggestions by 17 May by 23:59 via the Google Forms linked below!

The Campus Happening is a free outdoor event that is organised on campus. There are different kinds of activities on offer for new and continuing students as well as for UEF staff members. The event is organised by ISYY and UEF together. The programme of the event is published in ISYY and UEF’s communication channels later.

Do you love anniversaries? Do you want to be involved in implementing ISYY’s jubilee traditions or even developing something completely new?

ISYY 12th Annual Jubilee will be held 29.10.2022 in Kuopio and you can now apply to ISYY’s Annual Jubilee team.

If organising events is your thing, this call is for you! Previous experience in ISYY is not required.

Are you passionate about plants? Interested in trying out some gardening?

It’s now possible to come do some gardening and grow useful plants and whatnot! ISYY is gathering groups on both campuses for this purpose, as long as there are enough interested students. The contact for the Kuopio campus is ISYY's Board Member Matti Karhunen (matti.karhunen@isyy.fi) and for the Joensuu campus ISYY's Board Member Sami Tanskanen (sami.tanskanen@isyy.fi).

In a nutshell, this is what’s going to happen: The university acquires the soil and grow boxes. The saplings and other seeds are acquired by the group. 1-2 grow boxes will be allocated for both campuses each, and the groups will decide for themselves what to grow. After planting everything, it will be mostly smooth sailing for the grow teams. The saplings need to be watered weekly and the garden needs to be weeded every now and then. It’s good to be able to commit to the gardening group in such a way that you can attend the growing activities on a weekly basis over the summer. The whole activity requires about half an hour from each grow team member for it to work out. Prior experience from gardening is not required.

The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote the well-being of students and increase commonality. The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you!

There are different hobbies - you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week, usually on Fridays.

Have you wanted to write about something important to you or take a stand on a conversation around you? In the ISYY’s blog, students get their own voices heard and the opportunity to spark a discussion. The topic of your writing may be related to for example, studying, student well-being as well as other current topics affecting students. Right now we are especially looking for writings related to the students’ financial situation affecting mental health. We publish anonymous writings by request.

Motivation Wednesdays - Support for English speaking students and researchers

Can’t find motivation to study? Or simply, feeling lonely? Maybe on Motivation Wednesday you can find the support you need?

The Motivation Wednesday meetings take place weekly on Zoom and will last for two hours. The first hour is devoted to knowledge sharing and discussions, the second hour is for the participants’ own use like work, study using the Pomodoro technique. Each week a new topic will be discussed. The topics will include stress and anxiety management, gaining and sustaining motivation, boosting attention, improving learning effectiveness as well as setting priorities and achieving goals

The meetings take place on Wednesdays 15.15-17.00 (EET) via Zoom link. You can also chat anonymously with other attendees.

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes. Physical stickers are available to purchase at the ISYY office. Spring 2022 stickers are valid until 31.8.2022 so you can use the services during the summer as well! Please follow our hygiene and safety instructions

SYKETTÄ stickers for the autumn season 2022 and the academic year 2022-2023 will be on sale 1.6.

You can buy SYKETTÄ mobile stickers for the autumn season and the next academic year from 1.6. on our online shop or via the mobile application. Stickers are valid immediately from 1.6. so you can already participate in summer classes and turns. We recommend that you read the SYKETTÄ terms of use before purchasing the SYKETTÄ sticker. Visit the online store by clicking here.

Download the SYKETTÄ mobile application to buy and use the mobile sticker. With the application, you can start using SYKETTÄ right away without visiting a campus office. You can use the mobile sticker instead of or alongside a physical sticker. The application is available free of charge under the name Sykettä Joensuu, on Google Play for Android devices and on the App Store for iOS devices. Physical SYKETTÄ stickers are available from ISYY office from week 31 onwards and from POKA offices from week 34 onwards.

Old SYKETTÄ stickers will be valid until 31.8.

SYKETTÄ takes part in Kilometrikisa 2022!

Kilometrikisa is a light-hearted cycling competition for workplaces, departments, associations, clubs or any other teams. The aim is to encourage bicycle commuting and promote everyday cycling. Kilometrikisa will be held between May 1st – September 22nd 2022.

In Kilometrikisa every team member will record their cycling kilometers and the team with the highest number of kilometers will win. All UEF and Karelia UAS staff members and students are welcome to attend SYKETTÄ Joensuu team!

Welcome to a UEF info session on Thursday, 19 May 2022, starting at 9. In the info session, the new members of the UEF Board will introduce themselves, and other topics on the agenda include the university’s financial statement for 2021 as well as an outlook of the university’s activities and finances for the near future. In addition, the Academic Rector will talk about current issues in education.

The info session will be attended by the members of the UEF Board, Rector, Academic Rector, Director of Administration and Chief Financial Officer.

Assessment of International Students Language Skills' Needs by UEF Language Centre

Dear international student,

This survey was created by the UEF Language Centre, and it is aimed at current international master’s and doctoral degree students at University of Eastern Finland. Your opinion will help us to assess the students' language skills needs, improve our currently offered services and possibly create new ways to help international students to achieve their academic and professional goals.

The survey has 20 questions, and it takes about 5-10 minutes to be completed. The survey is anonymous unless you wish to leave your contact information at the end of the questionnaire for further discussion if you have ideas on how to improve the Language Centre services. In that case, there will be a draw of two 20 € S-Group gift cards among these students.

The data usage and storage conform with the University of Eastern Finland data protection rules. The data collected will be stored for a maximum of five years.

The survey will be open until May 20th.

The application period for outgoing exchange during spring semester 2023 open in May!
The application period ends on May 31 at 3 pm – late applications will not be accepted, so please make sure you submit your application in time!

Call for applications for Erasmus+ traineeships 2022-2023

The application round for Erasmus+ traineeship for the academic year 2022-2023 opens on June 1, 2022. The previous application round ends on May 31, 2022, so the application can be submitted already during May for the academic year 2022-2023. There is a rolling application round for Erasmus+ traineeships and grants will be awarded for as long as grants are remaining.

Please see Kamu's call for applications and apply in SoleMOVE once you have received confirmation of your traineeship from the host organization.

Mielentekoja - one-on-one chat (Mondays from 5 to 7 pm)

Nyyti mielenTEKoja-chat is open and ready to ponder with you about any stumbling block or everyday dilemma in student life.

mielenTEKoja-chat offers university students one-on-ones peer support regarding studies and mental wellbeing. The volunteer on-call counsellors are regular students trained by Nyyti. The chat is anonymous and free of charge.

North Karelia Pride is coming! Our theme this year is PEACE.
North Karelia Pride week is full of events, and the week culminates to Pride parade on Saturday 21.5:

Pride parade on Saturday 21.5:

Make your own sign and cool accessories for the parade between 1 pm-2:30 pm in yhteisötila Helmi (Rantakatu 23 A, Joensuu). Bring your own cardboard!
Pride parade starts at the Joensuu marketplace at 3 pm.
After the parade, there's an outdoor event in Ilosaari. Grab a picnic blanket, some snacks and wear warm clothes. Live music performances by Linnea von Kattendam, Proto Torvinen, and Kerubi's own DJ's!

Joensuu city centre summer open (20.5-21.5)

City centre summer open gathers all of North Karelia to the Joensuu marketplace! Vendors are selling handicraft products and local delicacies worth trying - or taking as a souvenir. The event takes place on Friday 20.5 and Saturday 21.5, all are welcome!

Global Fridays at Joensuun Setlementti

Joensuun Setlmentti ry organises multicultural meetings every Friday from 5pm to 9pm.

We increased the maximum amount of hangout space to 15 people. Come spend the evening with us at Global Friday.

“Keys to Well-being – 5 Steps towards Future Work Skills” online trainings are designed to improve self-management skills, which are increasingly important in the changing world of work and study. Transformation of work requires new skills and competences: time and self-management skills, resilience and adaptability, collaboration skills, new ways of thinking, taking care of well-being and finding meaning in our work.

The online trainings consist of short videos as well as in-depth trainings. The trainings can be accessed flexibly at any time that suits you. They are free of charge to UEF staff and students, and they are available until January 31, 2023. What is my Student Organisation?

Student Organisations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Organisations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you!

Each Student Organisation has their own overalls colour, they are listed in ISYY's student calendars! You can watch this Youtube video to learn more about the Finnish higher education overall tradition.

Information about Weekly Feed

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself.

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.
