HAPPY TUESDAY!

If you're wondering why 12 May is a flag day in Finland, it's because of the philosopher, writer and statesman Johan Vilhelm Snellman (1806-1881). He had a big influence on Finnish language, Finnish culture and even on the use of our old currency, markka. You can read more about Snellman here. The 12th of May is Snellman's birthday and the day is known nowadays as the "Day of Finnish Identity" or the "Finnish Heritage Day".

P.S. There are two other flag days this week: today 9 May is Europe Day and Sunday 14 May is Mother's Day in Finland.

Exceptions in ISYY office opening hours in May

There is one national holiday left in May that causes an exception in ISYY office opening hours: Thursday 18th May is the Ascension Day. Take thia exeption into account if you are planning to visit us.

Representative Council Meeting 3/2023 11th May 5 pm

The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) will hold its third meeting of 2023 on Thursday 11th of May.

The meeting will be held in rooms AU100 (Joensuu) and SN201 (Kuopio) at 5 pm and the Representative Council will, among other things, have a preliminary debate on the election procedure of student representatives to the UEF Board, discuss the facility needs assessment of Kuopio and decide whether to continue with the acquisition of a new office in Joensuu. The meeting notice can be read from ISYY website.

You can follow the meeting in the classrooms or via a stream on ISYY’s YouTube channel. Welcome!

Calendar cover competition ends on Monday 15th May

What will the next ISYY Student Calendar look like? Now it is the last days to take part in the ISYY Calendar cover competition. The winning design will be the cover of our next calendar and the winner will receive a 100€ gift card to S-group.

The design must be sent to ISYY's Communications Planner via email to address tiedotus(at)isyy.fi no later than 15th May 2023. More specific details and instructions can be found from ISYY websites.

The Student Calendar is carried along daily by many students of UEF. Next autumn your design might be the cover of our popular calendar!

Hey freshman 2022, collect an overall badge!

Congratulations, you have almost completed the first academic year! In the beginning of the academic year 2022-2023 ISYY organised a freshman bingo for those who started their studies at UEF in autumn 2022. The purpose of the bingo was to make ISYY services more familiar to the new freshmen. A great amount of students completed the bingo, but we still have some of the badges left. We are now giving away our Freshman 2022 badges to those who have started their studies in UEF during this academic year. Be fast since the badges are given on a first come, first served basis. The badges can be collected from ISYY offices during opening hours.

PIVO student card will be out of use on Wed 10.5. at 5-12

Are you using PIVO's electronic student card? Please note that PIVO's student card will be out of use on Wednesday 10th May from 5 am to 12 pm. Please bring a plastic student card with you, if you have one, or download another student card alternative if you must use your student benefits on Wednesday.

SYKETTÄ Joensuu

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes.

SYKETTÄ in summer 2023

SYKETTÄ moves also in the summer! All the services of the summer are put together on SYKETTÄ website. The page will be updated as summer services are confirmed. Enrollment on all summer classes and turns via sports calendar. You can participate in all summer activities with group exercise and ball sports sticker.

Summer sports calendar includes:

Outdoor workouts instructed by physical activity counsellor Riina
Instructed cycling trips
Summer classes of JoenVoLi
Ball sports turns at Mehtimäki hall
Portti54 and Aurora gym are open throughout the summer

Tikkarinne gym is closed due to renovation between 17.5.-31.7.2023. Joensuu Areena gym is open according to the opening hours of the Joensuu Areena.

Sports turns application for student and staff groups, 2023-2024

UEF and Karelia UAS student and staff groups can apply for regular turn to season 2023-2024. Sports turns will run between September - May. All users must have a valid sports sticker before the services can be used.

Each turn must have 1-2 responsible persons. The turn cannot be granted before it has at least one responsible person. Responsible persons have to check that everybody who will participate, has an up-to-date sports sticker. Also, responsible persons will take care of general order and report the number of participants and if necessary cancel the turn by contacting SYKETTÄ at least week before the date.

Application time ends on 28.5.2023 at 23:55 o'clock.

All the applicants will be called to a meeting where the turns are distributed. The meeting time will be announced later. After the meeting all applicants will be informed about the distributed sport turns.

Greetings from the coordinator

Howdy! In this section there is information about current issues and upcoming events of the BRIDGES project. The last breakfasts of the spring semester were eaten last week. Information about the autumn's breakfasts and other upcoming events will be informed in August at the latest. Thanks already at this stage to all those who participated in the spring events, hope to see you on Saturday 20.5. at Joensuu Pride! Next week's newsletter will include a link to a questionnaire where we will ask for feedback on the project's activities and what would you like to continue after the project ends. But more about that in next week's newsletter.

Pride parade and park festival 20.5.

ISYY will be co-organising Pride in Joensuu on Saturday 20.5. with North Karelia's Seta!

The Pride parade will start at 3 pm and end at 4 pm in Ilosaari, where there is picnic, live music, a bouncy castle and, of course, great company. ISYY encourages all students to take part in Pride and wear their student overalls to form a rainbow. ISYY will have its own felt area at the park festival, bringing together all students. The first 100 students in the felt area will receive a fabulous ISYY Pride Hemmo overall badge as a memory.

The National Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences SAMOK and the National Union of University Students in Finland SYL are conducting a survey on students' experiences and perceptions of the Finnish Student Health Service and its future.

Calls for Application for Outgoing Student Exchange have been posted!

The application period for outgoing exchange during spring semester 2024 is open! During this application period, students may apply for Erasmus+, YUFE/Erasmus+, Nordlys or bilateral exchange.

The application period ends on May 31 at 3 pm sharp – make sure you submit your application in time!

Sound Zone questionnaire for the customers of Joensuu campus library

In late March Joensuu Campus Library introduced Sound Zones to better facilitate various types of activities carried out in the library.

Now the library would like to hear your initial response to the introduction of the Sound Zones, as well as gather feedback for future improvements.

The questionnaire is open until Sunday 21 st of May 2023. We are extremely grateful for all responses!

Ascension Day opening hours of UEF libraries

Joensuu and Kuopio campus libraries are open on Wednesday 17th May 8am–3pm (Customer service 10am–3pm).

Joensuu and Kuopio campus libraries and KUH Medical Library are closed on Thursday 18th May.

Library's 24/7 self-study facilities are open normally.

Multicultural Coffee by the Red Cross (21.5)

Do you want to meet new people? Have you been feeling a bit lonely, or are you finding it hard to find a community? Come join us for our multicultural coffee, whether you are a refugee, a student, a local, or an immigrant. Come join us at Torikatu 17 every alternate Sunday, for an afternoon of games, good conversation, and coffee. This is the perfect opportunity to make new friends and build community!

Information about Weekly Feed

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself.

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.
