The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland
04.01.2022
The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) conducted a communications questionnaire for its members from 15th to 29th November 2021. The questionnaire gained altogether 51 responses. According to the answers, ISYY’s communications reached the respondents fairly well. It was also seen as fairly interesting and the amount of it was felt as suitable. The respondents also wished to have more information on certain topics, such as welfare and events. In addition, according to the answers, ISYY could communicate more in the University’s communication channels and on campuses.
The aim of the communications questionnaire was to find out how ISYY’s members feel about the SU communications, which channels they would like ISYY to utilise more and what kind of hopes and ideas they have regarding it. In addition, the questionnaire aimed to find out which SU communication channels the members follow and how interesting they find ISYY’s communications and the different channels.
According to the results, ISYY’s communications seems to reach the respondents quite well: 53 % of the respondents rated the communications’ reachability as 4 on a scale of 1 to 5. The communications was also felt as fairly interesting: 39 % of the respondents rated it as 4 on a scale of 1 to 5.
In addition, when the respondents were asked what grade they would give to ISYY’s communications on the whole on a scale of 1 to 5, 59 % of the respondents gave it a grade 4.
Topics which ISYY is hoped to cover more in its contents, include interest advocacy, ISYY’s activities and students’ everyday-life. According to the answers, ISYY could also communicate more about events, welfare, university matters and student organisations.
As in the previous communications questionnaires, also this time ISYY’s Finnish language newsletter Wiikko-Ärsyke, was the most followed one of ISYY’s communication channels: 88 % of the respondents followed Wiikko-Ärsyke and 73 % of them read it weekly.
The Wiikko-Ärsyke received good feedback because it offers information on various subjects. However, some respondents also felt that it is too long. This is something that can be developed in 2022.
Instagram (53 %) was the second most followed communication channel. The third most followed channels were Facebook, campus notice boards and campus info screens which were all mentioned by 31 % of the respondents.
Top 4 communication channels that the respondents wished ISYY to use more in the future were Instagram (33 %), Wiikko-Ärsyke (26 %), campus info screens (24 %) and campus info boards (22 %). 33 % of the respondents also stated that they don’t wish ISYY to utilise the communication channels more, because they already get the necessary information as it is. The amount of information in different channels was also experienced as quite suitable.
According to the answers, out of the University’s communication channels, ISYY could utilise Tuudo (61 %) and Yammer (45 %) more. The possibilities for boosting ISYY’s communications in these channels will be looked into this year.
Despite of the COVID19 and the changes it has brought, ISYY’s presence on campuses seems to be fairly good according to the questionnaire. When asked how well ISYY stands out on campuses, 39 % of the respondents rated it as 4 on a scale of 1 to 5.
The results of the questionnaire have been discussed with the ISYY staff and Board and they will be utilised when planning ISYY’s communications in 2022. Thank you to all respondents!
