The Chair of the Executive Board of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY), Mirka Nieminen, has been elected to the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) for the year 2025. The last time that ISYY’s candidate was elected was to the Board 2023.
The SYL General Assembly elected the Board 2025 for the union on Saturday 16 November. ISYY’s candidate Mirka Nieminen was elected to the board. Mirka Nieminen, 25, is a Master’s Student in Social Work in UEF Kuopio campus. Nieminen has been a member of the ISYY Executive Board in 2023 working with social policy, and in 2024 as a Chair of the Executive Board.
– I am extremely grateful for the trust and support I have received. ISYY has shaped me into a resilient student advocate, and I am excited to take my expertise further at a national level next year. The current situation for students is challenging, and it requires persistent and effective advocacy to address the cuts to student welfare. I am ready to take on this challenge together with the other SYL board members next year, says Nieminen.
On Friday 15 November the General Assembly also elected President for the Board 2025, Anselmi Auramo, 27, from the Student Union of LUT University (LTKY).
The National Union of University Students in Finland represents approximately 140,000 university students, and its members consist of the student unions of all universities in Finland. The Union is making an impact on the themes of academic affairs, social policy and international affairs.
The General Assembly is held every year at the end of autumn and it is the highest decision-making body of the union. The General Assembly also decided about the budget and the action plan for the union for the upcoming year.
