Wellbeing Week at the University of Eastern Finland will focus this year on concentration and how to improve it

Wed Sep 25 09:05:00 2024

The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and the Student Union (ISYY) will celebrate Wellbeing Week on both campuses in Joensuu and Kuopio on 30.9.-6.10.2024 for the eleventh time.

The aim of the Wellbeing Week is to offer UEF students and staff a wide range of wellbeing activities throughout the week. The week will also provide information and practical tips on how to promote your own wellbeing. This year, the theme of the week is to encourage UEF students and staff to take breaks from screens and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, giving the brain time to recover and improve focus on work and studies.

– We study and work on computers with multiple tabs open, while the phone constantly beeps with notifications. In our free time, we instinctively reach for our phones, and social media is full of fast-paced content competing for our attention. You can even watch YouTube and TikTok videos at double speed to ‘save’ time. Personally, my brain has turned to mush, and reading a traditional book or watching TV feels frustratingly slow. My mind is occupied with a shopping list, next week’s schedule, and a friend’s party a month away - even when I’m watching a long-awaited episode of my favourite show on TV. Life has become too hectic at times, and I have to schedule screen-free time in my calendar to let my brain rest and ‘reorganise’ itself, comments Community Coordinator Eveliina Scharin.

The Wellbeing Week programme includes activities like petting the Finnish Kennel Club’s Care Dogs, Sports Afternoon organised by SYKETTÄ sports services, and a day trip to Tiilikkajärvi National Park. Additionally, students can join the free Coffee & Friends café, where they can create their own dream boards during Wellbeing Week. ISYY will also share various tips on social media for supporting wellbeing and concentration, so that while browsing, people may come across useful information and remember to take breaks from staring at screens.
