ISYY and UEF's Wellbeing Week 30.9.- 6.10.2024

Mon Sep 16 08:30:00 2024

Wellbeing Week will be held for the eleventh time at the University of Eastern Finland from 30th of September to 6th of October 2042. The aim of the Wellbeing Week is to offer UEF students and staff a wellbeing promoting program throughout the week.

How to stop the rat race of concentration problems?

The constantly hectic everyday life and the increasing amount of staring at the screen during studies, work and free time make it more and more difficult to concentrate. Along with ADHD, which is already familiar to most people, we have started talking about ADT (Attention Deficit Trait), which is a behavior pattern that resembles attention deficit disorder but does not meet its diagnostic criteria. ADT is characterized by self-interruption - when you should be concentrating on, for example, reading an exam book, many competing thoughts start crossing your mind and it is difficult to concentrate only on the exam book.

Several factors predispose to this type of behavior, which include, for example, hurrying, multi-tasking, constant interruptions, uncertainty and too little recovery. As a result of all this, "The brain gets overloaded and endless to-do lists cause feelings of inadequacy and worry. All of this is apt to cause chronic stress. Chronic stress is known to cause problems with learning, memory and concentration." (Source: FSHS)

However, not all concentration problems can be blamed solely on hectic everyday life and ADT. If the ability to function is significantly reduced and the person has had challenges with the regulation of activity and attention since childhood, it is worth contacting health care professionals to examine the situation.

During Wellbeing Week, a variety of activities will be organised to provide tools to increase one's own wellbeing and support the ability to concentrate. For example, the Finnish Kennel Club's Care Dogs will visit campuses and a lecture aimed at international students will offer tips on how to survive the Finnish winter and polar night. SYKETTÄ sports services will organize the traditional Sports Afternoon, and the week will culminate with a day trip to Tiilikkajärvi National Park.ISYY will also share on Instagram various wellbeing-related tips.

In addition to both campuses, there is also some program which will be held online. Please note that some of the week's activities require pre-registration and have an entrance fee. Read more about the whole week's program and offers on the event page isyy.fi/wellbeingweek.

Our partners during the Wellbeing Week: UEF, SYKETTÄ Joensuu, SYKETTÄ Kuopio, FSHS, Compass Group and Tukipilari.
