Academic & Historical Dance Society Joensuu

Academic & Historical Dance Society is a club operating on the Joensuu campus of the University of Eastern Finland that maintains European historical dance culture.

The club organizes dance rehearsals, ball events and workshops open to all, and enlivens history with, for example, history-themed excursions. The activities are bilingual (Finnish and English), and the club collaborates with dance clubs in other university cities and historical re-enactment enthusiasts. We also help student associations to implement the tradition of academic social dances at annual celebrations.

Historical dances are social court dances from the 14th to 18th centuries. Information about them is based on the notebooks of European court dance masters, and they have been reconstructed down to music from historical sources, and modern choreographies are also created based on these.

Welcome to the historical dance workshops on Mondays 6-8 pm at Borealis lobby. The rehearsals are free and don’t require signing up, it’s enough to just come and join. We practice different dances every week so no previous experience or a partner is needed.
