Wellbeing Week 2024

30.09.2024 - 06.10.2024 |Kaikki

Wellbeing Week will be held for the eleventh time at the University of Eastern Finland from 30th of September to 6th of October 2042. The aim of the Wellbeing Week is to offer UEF students and staff a wellbeing promoting program throughout the week.

How to stop the rat race of concentration problems?

The constantly hectic everyday life and the increasing amount of staring at the screen during studies, work and free time make it more and more difficult to concentrate. Along with ADHD, which is already familiar to most people, we have started talking about ADT (Attention Deficit Trait), which is a behavior pattern that resembles attention deficit disorder but does not meet its diagnostic criteria. ADT is characterized by self-interruption - when you should be concentrating on, for example, reading an exam book, many competing thoughts start crossing your mind and it is difficult to concentrate only on the exam book.

Several factors predispose to this type of behavior, which include, for example, hurrying, multi-tasking, constant interruptions, uncertainty and too little recovery. As a result of all this, "The brain gets overloaded and endless to-do lists cause feelings of inadequacy and worry. All of this is apt to cause chronic stress. Chronic stress is known to cause problems with learning, memory and concentration." (Source: FSHS)

However, not all concentration problems can be blamed solely on hectic everyday life and ADT. If the ability to function is significantly reduced and the person has had challenges with the regulation of activity and attention since childhood, it is worth contacting health care professionals to examine the situation.

During Wellbeing Week, a variety of activities will be organised to provide tools to increase one's own wellbeing and support the ability to concentrate. ISYY will also share on Instagram various wellbeing-related tips.

See the schedule of the theme week's program below. In addition to both campuses, there is also some program which will be held online. Please note that some of the week's activities require pre-registration and have an entrance fee and those are always stated in the information of the event in question.

Finnish Kennel Club’s Care Dogs will be on the campuses in Joensuu at the Alkukivet statue and in Kuopio in front of Lukema/Studentia from 12pm to 2pm. Doctor Ari Kinnunen and clinical veterinary technician Pia Nikkari have found that dogs have a natural ability to make people feel good, because the presence and petting of a dog lowers blood pressure and slows the heart rate. In addition, a dog may have a calming and concentration-supporting effect, and according to Yle's article, pets reduce stress and help people to relax. So come and take a break that supports your wellbeing by petting dogs and drinking coffee!

Both campuses, for students and staff: Day trip to the National Park of Tiilikkajärvi

Update 25.9.: The departure from Joensuu is sold out. There are still a few free seats on the bus from Kuopio to Tiilikkajärvi.

Update 1.10.: Registration for the departure from Kuopio has been extended until Thursday 3 October 12.00pm!

Tiilikkajärvi National Park is a versatile, wilderness-like hiking destination. It is possible to move around Tiilikkajärvi independently or with ISYY's group. The ISYY expedition goes around the Uiton Kierto (7 km), which takes more than 3 hours. Halfway through the route, you can take a break at the Uitontupa fireplace or the beach at Venäjänhiekka. The hike route is not for beginners and there is no guide with us. Departure is from the campus on Friday morning and the return journey starts at 3.30 pm. We recommend eating a nutritious breakfast and taking enough food with you so that you don't get hungry in the middle of the day. We also recommend weather appropriate equipment and a little experience of hiking.

Registration is open on Kide.app between 16.-30.9. or as long as there are free seats in the bus. The price of the excursion is 7 € and includes the bus transportation from the campus to Tiilikkajärvi and back. Please note that registration is binding. Please note that if there aren't enough participants, we will have to cancel the trip. More information about the trip and schedules (as well as possible cancellation) will be sent via email to the participants no later than 1.10.
