This year we will kick-off the academic year of all UEF students in Joensuu and Kuopio Market Squares on Thursday 5 September with other students!
Before the market square event on both campus cities, we will begin the academic year 2024–2025 at UEF’s Academic Year Opening Ceremony starting at 1.15 pm in Kuopio. The opening ceremony can also be followed online. In Kuopio campus there will also be a student parade from Savilahti to Kuopio Market Square before the event in the city center. After the Academic Year Kick-Off event at both Joensuu and Kuopio Market Squares, the evening will continue with the traditional City Orienteering.
All UEF students and staff are welcome to join the event in the Market Square. In Joensuu the event will gather together students of UEF and Karelia UAS and in Kuopio students of UEF and other students of Savilahti area, such as students of Savonia UAS.
At the Academic Year Kick-Off event we will e.g. hear live music, speeches, and will get to know local organisations. The event in Joensuu is organised in cooperation with the City of Joensuu, Joensuu City Center Association Virta, University of Eastern Finland, Karelia University of Applied Sciences and its student union POKA. The event in Kuopio is organised with the University of Eastern Finland, Savonia University of Applied Sciences, Savo Vocational College and Student Union SAVOTTA.
Right after the Academic Year Kick-Off event will begin ISYY’s traditional City Orienteering, where students will go around their campus city in groups and complete different kinds of tasks given to them at different orienteering points. The evening will end with an after party.
City Orienteering and its after party are organised by ISYY.
Campus specific information on events at the Joensuu and Kuopio Market Square, Kuopio’s Student Parade and Joensuu and Kuopio City Orienteerings can be found below.

The start of the academic year will be celebrated at Joensuu Market Square on Thursday 5 September from 2 pm to 5 pm. The stage program will kick off with a welcome speech and greetings from the students, followed by DJ Kiri energizing the crowd. The Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off event will culminate with a performance by Kiki, one of the brightest rising stars in Finnish pop music. In addition to the stage program, there will be local associations’ booths where students can get familiar with different organisations and services available in the campus city.
The Student Blast - Academic Year Kick-Off event is organised in cooperation with the City of Joensuu, Joensuu City Center Association Virta, University of Eastern Finland, Karelia University of Applied Sciences and its student union POKA.

The City Orienteering (Kaupunkisuunnistus) is an event, where students will go around their campus city’s city centre in groups and complete different kinds of fun tasks given to them by different student associations and ISYY clubs. The starting point for the orienteering is at Joensuu Market Square at 5 pm. The event is free for new students and continuing students have an opportunity to participate in the event by paying a small fee. The event will culminate in the after party in Las Palmas Kimmel!
Information about the enrollment for different teams can be found below.
A tutor (or a student from the freshman group if the tutor doesn’t participate in the Orienteering) will register the group of new students to the event via Kide.app.
A tutor (or a student from the freshman group if the tutor doesn’t participate in the Orienteering) will register the group of new students to the event via Kide.app. The maximum size of a freshman team is 10 people, plus the tutor, making it 10+ tutor(s). Registration for new student groups starts on Monday 2 September at 3:00 pm and ends on Wednesday 4 September at 3:00 pm. You can also register for the Orienteering by contacting the Community coordinator Eveliina Scharin (Eveliina Scharin, yk(at)isyy.fi) once the Kide.app sales have opened.
The person who registered the team will pick up the orienteering package for their team during week 36 (2.9.-5.9.) from the ISYY office in the Haltia building (2nd floor) during office hours. The package includes an orienteering passport, a map and an overall badge for each team member. The overall badge serves as an entrance ticket to the after party.
Continuing students are able to attend the orienteering with a 30 € registration fee for a group of 6 people. The price includes an orienteering passport, a map and an overall badge for each team member. The overall badge serves as an entrance ticket to the after party.
The registration begins on Kide.app on Tuesday 3 September at 3:00 pm and will end on Wednesday 4 September at 3:00 pm. It’s also possible to register a group at the ISYY office once Kide.app sales have opened. NB! Only one person has to register the whole group. There are a limited number of group tickets!
The person who registered the team will pick up the orienteering package for their team during week 36 (2.9.-5.9.) from the ISYY office in the Haltia building (2nd floor) during office hours.

The team will receive a starting number which is the number of the orienteering point the group has to visit first. For example, if a group has got starting number 3, they must go to the orienteering point number 3 first and then start going around the orienteering points in a numerical order from the orienteering point 3 onwards. The group must visit 5 orienteering points in numerical order after which the group can decide what other orienteering points they want to visit.
Checkpoints are open until 9:30 PM. The people organising the tasks at the Orienteering will score the teams' performances with 1-5 points and record the points in the orienteering pass. At the end of the orienteering, the team totals their points and counts the final score in their pass. By collecting at least 45 points and returning the pass to Las Palmas Kimmel by 10:00 pm, the team enters a raffle. The raffle winner and prizes will be announced at the after party at Las Palmas Kimmel at 11:00 pm.
We encourage all City Orienteering teams to dress according to a chosen theme and participate in the city orienteering photo contest! During the orienteering, take a fun group photo of your team and send it via WhatsApp to ISYY Board’s Vice Chair Noora Saramäki (phone: +358 44 576 8410). Photos must be submitted by 9:00 pm and the ISYY board will select the winning team from the entries. The winning team and prizes will be announced at the after party at Las Palmas Kimmel at 11:00 pm.
The after party of the Joensuu event is in Las Palmas Kimmel (Itäranta 1, 80100 Joensuu), which is located on the other side of the river (from city centre). The after party starts at 9 pm. The after party is included in the orienteering fee and the City Orienteering overall badge serves as the entry ticket to the party. Be prepared for a cloakroom fee. Starting at 11.30 pm Finnish artist Pihlaja will entertain students after the long orienteering!

Before the LoveZone - Academic Year Kick-Off event, there will be a joint parade from Savilahti to Kuopio's market square for the students of Savo Vocational College, Savonia University of Applied Sciences and the University of Eastern Finland. The parade begins from Savilahdentie and university students, led by the ISYY board, will join the parade from Snellmania at around 2.05 pm. Students participating in the parade are encouraged to arrive at Snellmania well in advance of the departure. The parade is organized by Savo Vocational College and Savonia University of Applied Sciences.
